Did anyone who applied get drawn? You can view the results on the MN DNR page or call the DNR's information number to find out.

I was unsuccessful... was hoping to be able to get after one with the 454. Oh well, maybe next year?

I didn't even know that you were able to apply to hunt them in MN. That's pretty exciting. Keep trying, you never know.
I gave up applying for the PA elk hunt and the year I did my dad got drawn. I thought he was joking but he really did get drawn! He was even filmed for Jim Zumbo outdoors.

The God who gave us such a beautiful land, wonderful game, and the sport of hunting is worth knowing.

BB, can non-residents apply for a MN wolf tag? If so, when?

yes, non-residents can apply. If I remember correctly, they are allowed something like 10% of the available tags.

That is on par with other non- resident big game lotteries I know of. the application deadline was on Sept. 6th I believe.
Wisconsin is also having a season, not sure if they have non-resident tags, but I'm betting they do.

BBwheelgunner,

Congrats on your being pro-active and trying to get a tag on this issue...

You are doing what you should do as a hunter, which is help with the CONSERVATION of game. In this case, it is extremely important; probably even more so than killing a deer or an elk with a legal tag in hand. You could help bring the wolf numbers down to a more "natural level;" as they have definitely gotten out of hand; much to the chagrin of the various DNR's, including on the Federal levels...

Thanks Gregg,

Firstly I will say I think wolves are a very neat animal, and I am glad to have them in Minnesota, BUT that being said, I think it is a great opportunity for hunters to MANAGE the population just as we manage elk and deer as you have said.
(MN has the highest wolf population in the lower 48 with an estimated 3,000 mostly concentrated in the northern half of the state)

We have our hands "too far into the cookie jar" when it comes to wildlife populations. we have to manage them because we have upset the balance by taking habitat and certain other critters out of the equation, and I will do my part with pride.

Not only do I think It would be fun and challenging to hunt this unique species, but hopefully have the opportunity to bring a little more balance in the woods. Not to mention they sure would make an awfully cool rug

Maybe its time to push the state for a preference point system, if you do not already have one in place. If you do not draw, you get a point for next year. Folks with more points get drawn first the following year.

I hunt Colorado and NM, and Colorado has this sysetm, NM does not. And I can say definatively that not drawing year after year takes a toll on hunters. I know lots of folks here in NM that have flat given up. In Colorado, folks get bummed, but they are always excited about the next year, having points.

Craig,
MN does have a preference point system in place for wolf and bear. Definitely helps in knowing that your chances go up with each unsuccessful year in the lottery

That's good to hear. Absloutely no reason in this day and age of everything done electronically that a game department cannot implement a preference point system. I don't mind a game department hanging onto my money for lots of months if I know I will at least get a point to show for it

I hear ya there! even better here though, you don't have to pay for the license up front, I think it is only $4 to apply and then you can buy your license after you get drawn.

If you don't buy your license that you get drawn for by the given deadline, then it will go on sale to the folks who applied but were unsuccessful as a first come, first served. This is nice, so if there are anti-hunters applying, they have pay up and buy the license or it will go to someone else.

So that reminded me, technically, I may still have a shot at a tag, I will have to watch the DNR website and see if they all sell right away. I am betting they will all sell though

Well that sounds totally civilized. Soooommmmee game departments have figured out that they can bank a lot of money on undrawn tags, and gather a bit of interest money before returning the money. Hey, thats my money.

Good luck with your small chance....
