I've just purchased some cast bullets extremely cheap. The problem is, the bullets don't have a gas check. I'm planning to shoot them through my 475 linebaugh.
I'm wondering if this bullet will do any damage to my gun if I shoot them? Can any of you guy's give me a little insight on this, I have no experience with cast bullets at all..

So why start now ;-)

Just kidding.........sort of.

If you push soft lead too fast it will slime your barrel. If your throats aren't the perfect size they will slime your barrel. Some guys shoot only cast, I shoot none. It just doesn't seem prudent when quality naked boolits are no cheaper than jacketed, and cheap cast are not worth the time of day, IMO.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I actually shoot the Lee 325gr bullets (with out GC's) out of my 480 Ruger at around 1400 fps without any leading… FWIW.

There are too many variables here.

What is the weight of the bullet?

What is the construction of the bullet? Hard cast, soft lead, tempered?

Who made the bullet and what type of lube is on it?

Ps, I am running several cast bullets at 2200-2300 fps. (264gr 375cal Lyman in 375 JDJ Encore & 200gr Ranch Dog in my 338 Fed.) My 357 Max shoots a 180gr SIL at 2050 with 1680 and delivers 1/2in groups at 100 yards. Cast bullets can be awesome, they are just different...

With the advice of several users on this forum, I am buying Mr. Veral Smith’s book on casting.

load em up and shoot em,if they start to lead up shoot one or two jacketed through the barrel and that should take a lot of the lead out.

I think s4s4u is refering to "quality" cast vs. jacketed....

Here's an example:

Jacketed
Quality Cast
