i read max prasacs book, big bore revolvers. he thought that the 480 was a good all around big bore revolver = tolerable recoil with lots of nock down power.so if you have shot the 480 and other big bores, let me know what you think...

Hello neighbor, Dick Metcalf wrote the 480 has 80% of the 454 Casulls power with half the recoil. Mine"s a 9.5, and I like it a lot.

The 480 Ruger is a great round. You really can't go wrong with it.

It will depend some on the platform, but I can say that my SRH 480R with Hogue's Tamer grip doesn't really kick any harder than my Bisley in 45 Colt loaded to the hilt. I have yet to kill anything with it, but I am confident in it's abililties.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I have owned both models of Ruger's Super Redhawk. A 7 1/2 inch 454 and a 7 1/2 inch 480. I prefer the .480 Ruger because the felt recoil is more manageable. Even after a Magnaport FOur port process, the bite from the 454 seemed worse. Hopefully in the future I shall be able to take something with it.

Shot some boar with the 480 and a 325gr bullet and there was no difference between the 480 and other large calibers....

I'll let pictures speak for me, take a look at my albums, if there are any questions about the Ruger .480 performace, that should clear things up.

You already know where I stand -- LOL!

It is a great round as far as I am concerned. I may be taking delivery of a 5-shot .480 Bisley in the next couple of weeks.....

The .480 seems to be in a real sweet spot with respect to effectiveness vs. recoil in a wheelgun. A properly loaded 480R is "enough gun" anywhere in the world.

I have a SRH 480 and see a 5 shot bisley in 480R sometime in my future.

It is a real shame that it didn't catch on better than it did.

Metcalf said it left a fist sized wound in the coyote he shot,it also had the same trajectory as his .44 magnum-john

I really like my 480 Ruger Super RedHawk. I have both a 7.5" as well as a 9.5". I have both set up correctly with Hogue "Tamer" grips, and a Marble "Green" Fiber Optic Front Sight for back up. I am using a 30mm UltraDot sight for Deer Hunting.

In my opinion the 480 Ruger is all the handgun I will ever need for Deer Hunting in the woods. Recoil with full house loads is tolerable, but definently on the ragged edge of all the recoil I can enjoy.

I put 2 rounds on my 11 point whitetail buck last year. First one broadside behind the front shoulder, and a second raking shot taking him at the back of the ribs angling forward coming out again behind the front leg. Both shots went completely through. Either shot would have killed him stone dead in short order.
I consider the 480 Ruger to be the best revolver round ever chambered for big game hunting. I have never fired a factory round in either of my 480 Rugers. Reloading for them, they are not expensive to feed at all. I mainly cast my own bullets for my 480 Ruger. It will eat 9 grains of Unique under a 400, or a full charge. I even have a home-made shotshell worked out for the 480.
In my opinion the 480 Ruger has almost the perfect diameter Bullet for large game hunting. The perfect case size to get it up to speed. A short enough length to work in a Super RedHawk. The recoil is about all most of us can tolerate without flenching.
One needs to shoot a 480 Super RedHawk with Tamer Grips to understand the recoil. I have shot S&W 29's and 629's that hurt me way worse shooting them. A HOT 240 grain 44 Magnum from a S&W 29 can really work on your hand with the back of the trigger guard. This may be affected by the grips also. The SRH with Hogue Tamer grips has lots of Rubber and the Smurf Blue Sorbothane strip to take the sting out of shooting it.

The big slugs don't have to be run at 1400+ fps to be effective so the 480 works really well. I use 480 level loads and less in my 475L and it does just fine. Haven't found anything over the years that thought I was using too slow a bullet :). Funny thing is that the 480 can be loaded to basically 475L levels if you choose on the right platform but I bet the vast majority of prudent 475L shooters shoot the majority of their loads in the 480R level. Just easier on you and the gun and the animals never know the difference.

They are very effective, hit like a hammer, and will penetrate to next week. What more could you want??? I do much prefer the 475 single action gripframe to the super red hawk that I started with when they first came out. Just feels better to me personally.

I like the 480 Ruger. I've had a Ruger SRH in 480 for 9 years and have been pleased. I just picked up a 6.5" BFR in 480 Ruger/475 Linebaugh and I'm looking forward to shooting the beast a bit to get the feel of it. Never shot a BFR before and I am hoping that the recoil is more tolerable than the SRH.

You know, I got to thinking last night after posting about the grip frame feel and I had to laugh a little. Back when I first bought that SRH, I was still invincible, in college and thought I needed that gun to muster every bit of velocity it could cough up. I was running 435 Keith's from it and 375 LFNs. Fast forward about 12 years, I bet that gun would be ALOT more comfortable to shoot now
\:\)

I will say this, the SRH was a good shooting gun, especially for the cost!! I only shot a couple of animals with it before moving on to something different but I always wished I'd kept it around just to have it. You shouldn't get rid of the ones that shoot good

You can't go wrong with the BFR! I had a 6.5 inch in the .480/.475 and it was very accurate and nice to shoot. They are quite a bit heavier built than the Blackhawk and maybe just a little more than the SRH. I have a Freedom Arms in .475 and it bucks alot more than the BFR. You can get a factory BFR in .500 JRH now and that is a great round to.

James, can I ask, where did you take your boar at, what state? Looks like where I and my son hunted in Vermont.
