I'd look at a Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt, if you load, or a Ruger Super Redhawk in 480R. Both have plenty of punch for your needs. Even the common 44 Mag would giterdun, but it is so generic ;-)
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I really like my 5 1/2-inch Bisley, and a factory load that I like a lot is the 335 grain WLN load from Grizzly Cartridge. I used it on the hog below a few months ago and it worked quite well.

10 mm is a totally different ball game as it is a semi auto. That's a matter of preference there. I would suggest you look at whether or not you want a double action revolver, single action revolver, semi auto, or one of the various single shot platforms.
Each one appeals to different folks for different reasons.
After that I would say you should think about how far you want to shoot vs. how easy you want the gun to be carried.
From there, do you want to hunt with a scope, red dot sight, or iron sights?
The pistol whit displayed is perfect for a hog gun in a single action revolver and is very easily carried.
I went with the Ruger super blackhawk hunter in the .44 (I don't reload yet and thought that was my best option). I have a red dot sight on mine.

I have a Bisley Hunter in .44 Mag as well, with an Ultradot 6 on top. That is another fine revolver.

Not a bad idea, and whit has another good suggestions.
For your price range and the style you prefer, you would be hard pressed to be a ruger for the money.

I just got one on-line from one of the usual auction sites. Mine is the SS Bisley 5 1/2" convertible that will also shoot 45acp....around $550.

I don't think you could go wrong with a bisley in 44 or 45. I'm still trying to decide between a 5.5 or the hunter model. I like the 10mm but still need to try some 200 grain loads on hogs. The 180's will do it but I haven't had any exit wounds on hogs.

Whit is that a chunk of cocabola?... does it have a home? It's English Walnut that was born and raised in Northern California. It is slated to become a couple of sets of grips!

i tried a scope on one of my revolvers and it was ok but i rather use irons. I also like iron sights however I have found that for a hog gun nothing beats a good red dot sight. Many of your shot opportunities may come right at dusk and a set of iron sights simply disappears against the black/brown body of a hog. The UltraDot that Whitworth mentioned is a good great sight (no magnification, just a red dot) as well as other smaller offerings such as a Leupold Delta Point. Have fun with it. Hogs are one of my favorite animals to hunt.

I agree with 98redline, I have tried Iron sights and found them to be very difficult at night. I went with a burris fastfire III.
Also, I had thought about fiber optics, well last night i was out with a muzzle loader hunting with fiber optics. It was an overcast day and I had to get down 10 minutes before legal shooting time because I would have been unable to see the fiber optics on a deer at 15 yards.
