I have a Ruger MKIII Hunter that I'd like to put a scope on, but don't want to add a lot of weight. I've been a Leupold fan since I had so many issues with other scopes. The only "red dot" type sight from Leupold that I can find is the Delta Point. However, it says it has a 3.5 MOA, which is just not acceptable to me. Is there another "red dot" option they have that I am not aware of? Or, do they have a more traditional scope for a rimfire handgun? I can't seem to find much information on their sight about rimfire pistols.

Thanks!

I was loyal to Leupold for a time myself, but then found other companies better suited what I was looking for. Are you willing to compromise what works best for you just to have their name on it? Just a thought.

You might try an Ultra Dot red dot sight. They're available in 1" (the lightest, and the one I use on many guns) and 30 mm diameters.

SBhunter -- I prefer Leupold because they are the ONLY scope that worked on my 460 smith and wesson revolver. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something else that Leupold offers that will do what I am wanting. If they don't have anything else, then yes, I'm all for using something else that does what I need done. I don't compromise on accuracy, but if Leupold has something that does what I need, I'd just prefer to use them, that's all. MOST of the time, their scopes will outperform my abilities, and that is all I ask of any of my optics. I HATE being limited by glass. That's why I DON'T want to use the Leupold Flexpoint. I believe I can shoot better than 3.5 MOA, which is all I think that scope is capable of with a 3.5MOA dot. Thus the reason I'm NOT using that Leupold optic, even though it does say "Leupold" on it. Can you recommend something that has a smaller dot from someone else? I'd certainly be interested if you have some suggestions.

500WE -- But what is the MOA of the dot? I'm not sold on the idea that red dots are small enough to do the job I am needing. I know this MKIII is capable of being stupid accurate. That's why I don't want a 3.5MOA dot on the flexpoint. If there is a very tiny dot on the one you are talking about, I'd be interested. But I'm thinkin I will be leaning towards the more traditional crosshairs if there isn't anything like that available. But I'll certainly look into that scope. Thanks!

I'm only going to be using this for hunting small game out to about 75 yards tops, and need to be able to do head shots on rabbits and squirrels. That way I can discard the head, and the rest of the body is safe for my falconry birds to eat by eliminating the possibility of lead poisoning.

Basically what I am saying is that I need a scope that will outperform me, and not limit my accuracy potential at the farther distances. A 3.5MOA dot will damn near cover the entire head of a squirrel at 75 yards. I don't want that, and I believe I can shoot better than that.

I would suggest a Weaver 2.5X8 or Bushnell Elite 2x6.

My wife has a Ruger 22/45 with a Tactical Solutions 6"" upper on it.

I installed an Aimpoint T1 that has a 2 MOA dot, although the dot seems smaller if you dial the intensity down.

I also installed a Volquartson trigger , sear group.

The whole thing weighs 26 oz.!!

It will shoot small ragged holes at 25 yds for her.

The only problem I have with it is it almost too light,

I really have to pay attention to what I am doing to shoot

groups with it, but the gun is certainly capable!!

I think it would be ideal on your .22 Hunter!!

You can get the Aimpoint with a low, standard Weaver style

mount, it sits very low on her's, very easy to get used to!!

If what you want is a short, comparatively lightweight scope with magnification and crosshairs, then the 2X Leupold will be the leader in that category.

Here's my MkIII with a 2-6 Bushnell Trophy. Taken over 100 groundhogs, crows, possums, and coons with it out to 96 yds. Light, pick your power, can't be beat

WOW! What barrel length is on that beast? Looks good, but it looks like it would compare to swinging a telephone pole! My 460 smith and wesson revolver with a 12" barrel was that way!

Nice rig though! I'll take a look at that scope for sure.

Nope. Very light, very quiet. Carry it in a belt holster. Puts one clip of bullets in 1/2" at 25 (one ragged hole).

Raptor,

You are going to be hardpressed to find any red dot that will give you rabbit heads at 75 yards. The dots are generally just too big. If you do decide to go this way, your best bet is to make sure you pick one where you can dial the intensity. Some folks think the Leupold with the large delta is actually better for precision, using the tip of the delta. I only had that version for a short while, so I cannot say yea or nay to that. You can find a few red dots that have a larger aiming circle for speed, and a smaller center dot for precision. For 75 yards, you are really going to want a dot that is more like 2moa (or smaller ;^) )

I prefer a scope on my Ruger MKII Competition. With the lack of recoil, you really do have a lot of choices, as you do not have to pay for recoil resistence. Pick a brand that has clear glass, and the magnification range you need.

Yeah I found one from mildot that actually has that intensity thing you are talking about. On a 2 or 3, I could just barely see it, and it was VERY tiny. It was only $80, which makes me question its quality.

Any experience with this red dot?

Now that you mention the use of the point of the triangle on the reflex, I do seem to remember reading that somewhere else on this forum... Maybe I'll give that a go.

I picked up a browning ,made for buckmark pistols, kind of halo sight no magnification .This has 4 different kinds of sight configurations and the dot is pretty small. I have it mounted on my 22\45 hunter.I give 40 bucks for it .I am pretty happy with it .. not sure if It will work on rabbit head shots at 75 yds

Raptor,

Not familiar with that red dot. With the 22, you can take a chance on pretty much anything as the recoil will probably not kill it. But, if you spend a tad more to a bunch more, you can do a dot that would also be compatible with your big kickers. If you make sure everything is picatinny or weaver compatable you can switch back and forth. These small dots usually only need one slot, so it is easier to go weaver or pic. If you go to a dot with two rings, then you need to pay attention to pic. v. weaver. same with a scope.

I would heartily suggest perhaps ditching the Ruger ring system in favor of a weaver or pic. rail if you think there is any chance you might want to swap stuff between guns or even rifles. You can do this with red dots.

Thanks Craig. I normally am not the type to switch scopes back and forth between firearms. Once I put it on, the only thing keeping me from welding it on is the idea that it just might need some repair work some day. Well, that and the damage it would do to the gun of course. But once I put a scope on a gun, I don't take it off.

I'm going to give this little jewel a go with open sights for a while I think. Shot it a few times to get sighted in, and it is shooting much better than I expected. Or maybe it is ME that is shooting much better than expected?? HA!!

I won't be able to use head shots at 75 yards with open sights, so maybe I'll just hunt the little buggers down and get a little closer.

I can only imagine how much that will improve my sneaking skills!

Raptor,

Understand on the optics. I tend to like a particular optic for a gun also, but I am also a fuss for liking to have irons and optics of some sort. I am at that age where I can see see irons well enough, but I am probably on the downside to that slope ;^)

lately, with the advancement in red dots, I actually lean towards irons, glass and dots for the guns I like to shoot ;^)
