Just purchased a T/C Custom .300 Whisper w/ 12" barrel. I will be using for whitetails exclusively in Illinois, where suppressors are illegal. Without the sup. do I go subsonic or supersonic? Dur (SCH)explained alot of this to me last night but he is now chasing Texas whitetails and I need to place an order quickly. This gun will be a backup to my T/C .454 and also have an S&W 629 but wanted to try this caliber. Already have found several factory ammo offerings so please keep that in mind. Appreciate your help as always.

My suggestion would be for supersonic. It's not going to be that quiet regardless of the route you choose.

Absolutely. Plus supersonic loads will act "more normal" as far as what you will observe in "killing" capability compared to what you are/should be accustomed to if you have experience in hunting with this type of caliber; as opposed to a "subsonic load."

I have worked extensively for several years with both super and sub-loads in the .300 W and other sub-sonic/super-sonic loads (other calibers) and speak from hands-on.

And I think/hope Doc Rogers will weigh in on this one.

I shot two Illinois deer this season with my G2 Contender in .300 Whisper. I used Hornady 110 grain V-Max (supersonic).

Both deer dropped instantly because of good shot placement (base of neck). The distances were 38 yards and 48 yards.

Shot placement is more important than caliber.

I heard somewhere Hornady has changed the labeling on their Ammo to 300 AAC Blackout since that's the way the AR platforms are labeled and they are the biggest users of the ammo now.

My son bought a S&W AR last week labeled 300 Whisper. Very nice rifle in fit and finish; love the camo.

it probably depends on the brand and like I said it was just something I heard. I do know the whisper goes by several other names so they don't have to deal with the proprietary name. since the cartridge is based on and existing round though JD can't claim the cartridge itself as proprietary like FA does with the 500WE which has it's own unique brass. He's fought losing battles over that before.

You can shoot 300 Whisper ammo in a 300 Blackout but not the other way round. The shoulder is slightly more forward on the blackout.

from what I understand there is a slight difference like than in the 375X444 vs the 375JDJ. I think everything is starting to go the direction of the Blackout though.

I have an old oringal JDJones Super 14" .300 Whisper barrel for my Contender and had it for years I have killed lots of groundhogs and Crows, and my share old Whitetails with it. I prefer the 125gr Nosler BT it is good as it gets, I just started trying the factory Hornady 110 Vmax and they good.

A friend of mine just bought a 300 Whisper barrel and said he has been shooting the .300 Blackout ammo in it. I told him that it is different like Gary said the shoulder is slightly forward! He reply "Nope"... Ok , I know myself that it is different! -Right! So I called SSK Industries and talked to JD. ...and he said your right they are different... but you can shoot the .300 blackout in a 300 Whisper barrel, but he wouldn't recommend it in a AR platform because of feeding issues.
I respect JD a lot but I'm still gonna shoot .300 Whisper ammo in my barrel.

that's the same way as the 375X444, they are slightly different but appparently interchangeable.

Recent article in one of the rags (November 2012 issue of American Rifleman) about the two rounds.

Cartridge drawings of both rounds in the article. Not a nickel or dimes worth of difference in the two rounds, although the dimensions aren't exactly the same.

The author of the article even interviewed the "inventor" of both rounds.

that's like the 458X2", it's been around for ever and the 450 Marlin is almost identical in performance but the only difference is the length of the Marlin is 2.1" and case diameter at the rim is .512 vs .513 which means theoretically the Marlin can be fired in the Win mag or Lott although that is a alot of free space and the 458X2 can be fired in the Marlin and depending on how the chamber is cut it they could be interchangeable. It's done to seperate the namesakes. Fortunately there are only three names I know of that won't allow someone to chamber their name sake, JD, Reeder, and FA. If a cartridge is based on an existing cartridge though they can't stop you, you just can't use their name. FA is the only one in that category at this time with the WE. Fortunately Linebaugh, Casull, and Huntington aren't that way and neither was Waters or Ackley nor is Mike Bellm who owns the rights to all the Ackley cartridges. To me it's an ego thing and as a gunsmith it's just plain annoying. They still get the credit for their cartridge development because their name is on gun chambered for their round.

Sorry for getting off base on this, didn't mean to hijack but alot of people don't know about the behind the scenes bs that goes on.

Supersonic no question. We had more fun with that little thing before it got traded. 125gr Ballistic tips with a max load equal dead deer. reflex264
