hello guys I am just about finsihed up with my first can of powder. I used IMR 4227 to reload my 44 mags and 454 casull. I was wondering if there is a better choice of powder to use ? Not that I am die-hard on changing, I was just in the market and wondered if there where some better choices. I know there are the old stand bys like 2400 and H110, of which neither I have ever tried. I load my shells a couple grains from the max, so not full power but definetly hot still. I have been using 240 and 300 grain xtps along with speer 260 grain hollow points.I want a good accurate clean powder that still achieves good velocities. Should I try something new or stick with that I have been using ? Thanks, SS.

H110 is hard to beat! Performs very well at max levels; as for clean....well that's very subjective. I use H110 in all my mag loads: 357, 44, 454 and 475.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

H110 or 296 gets my vote as well.

Again H110. Played a little with the 300 MP from Alliant, but it turns out to be just like H110.

I do not load to the max in either. I use 2400. It is very accurate in my FA revolvers.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

296/110 is my all time favorite. For low end, I really like unique and 231. The 454 is super versatile which is why it's pretty much my favorite.

Hi Sniper,
I think you got it right the first time! I love IMR-4227 in 454. The top loads are plenty and the blast and recoil are more pleasant than H-110. The accuracy I have gotten (especially with gas checked cast bullets sized .452) has been outstanding.
It works well in 44 mag but H-110 or 2400 are probably better.
For those of you who haven't tried IMR-4227 in your 454 you should give it a try!
