Ok guys, I throwing this out to anyone who would have an idea what to do. I have my freedom Arms all sighted in and ready to hunt. The only issue I could see coming up is not being able to place the front sight at the corrct level in the rear sight during twilight. I would use a paint to mark the front blade, but don't want to use a color that would be more distracting then usefull. Any ideas?

I have Ken at Magnaport do all my front sights with red or orange inserts.

The fact of the matter is that during the early morning hours and the last few minutes of shooting light, iron sights all but disappear. You could paint the entire front blade bright orange (neon colored nail polish works very well). That would help in seeing the front sight for a bit longer but you are still likely to be a little short of a good aiming point near the end of shooting light.

Not that it helps you much right now, but this is the primary reason I have put a red dot sight on my primary hunting guns. I love the look of iron sights but that red dot gives me enough extra time that legal shooting hours are over before I no longer have enough light to shoot.

the only "iron" sight I've found that really works at all during those times are the green Hi Viz. The red is too dark but the green shows up like a sore thumb. As far as getting one for an FA I'm not sure.

I have the same issue on my BFR. I'm in the process of trying different paint colors. Lime green is the best so far.

I have green fiber optic on my shotgun and it works real well at dawn/dusk. Will likely try to find some for the BFR.

Thanks for the insight guys. Wapitirod, you hit the nail right on the head. Alot of the brighter colors seem to stick out like a sore thumb when you least want them to. I also noticed that when I did paint the front blade of my contender, at longer ranges it made it more diffacult to focus on the target..

I use florescent yellow on the front sight without problems.

Order a green fiber optic from Freedom Arms and hunt till dark (or legal shooting time). For hunting with fixed sights, it's the best thing I've found. Check out Gary's bragging board photos; he's got a pic of what it looks like.

I have a green FO sight and ORH peep and can see to shoot much later, or earlier, than I would be willing to take a shot.

Green has always "popped" for me with sight colors. I use acyrilic (spelling?) paint from the craft store. I use it for all my sights so I get the same picture for all guns.

Thanks Rod, Legal shooting in New York ends at sundown. But even at sundown it can be darker in the timbers. I want to hunt with this gun, but I also want to know that I can do so efficently.

You should be able to get a FO for the FA, but not sure about the peep. Even so, just the FO front will make a huge improvement.

I highly recommend the green fiber optic from FA and use the slot rear sight blade not the express. You will need to re-zero the gun and get used to shooting with it. It's not the best sight for punching paper but it is very good for shooting game.

Another vote for green really makes a difference on my self defense guns my hunting guns wear red dot electronic sights.

100% agree - the green fiber optics are on every one of my iron-sighted FA's (and even the ones that have worn irons in the past)!

Where does one get a sight like that for a BFR and Rugers?

Marble's makes the one I have on my Bisley Hunter.

This is the Hi Viz version for the "pin" style Ruger sights. This is on the Bisley I just sold.

I haven't found a paint that works as well as the acrylic "glow" sights

There are high persistence paints, that will emit light for up to 12 hours, a bit of that applied to the front sight will make your sight visible right into full darkness.
