I'm hoping to move over by the blues, I hunt the silvies and my wifes family has property right on the middle fork of the john day in fact part of its in the northside unit and the other in desolation.

If you two do move over to those areas you'll be close to me unless I get moved before then. Warrenton is about an hour or so north of me and I actually used to do my elk hunting around an area called sheridan lookout. It's about an hour or so from my house but for some reason the elk moved out of the area I was hunting after getting on the herd 4 years opening morning. There are alot of elk there though and be a good place to hunt. Just be prepared, this area will most likely not be like anything you've run into before. It's a rainforest and it's steep with houndreds of canyons and drainages and they ridge lines go every which way so it's easy to get turned around. I've hunted the blues, sierras and mostly the cascade high country along the border of crater lake and this is the nastiest stuff I've seen and the most dangerous. In the cascades we lose people to exposure when the snow comes but here there are bluffs and cliffs everywhere and the foliage will go right up to it and alot of times your hunting in fog or low clouds, alot of guys have gone off edges and died. The deer hunting is fair to poor, if your lucky the last week of the season the deer are in rut but if they aren't the hunting is hard for them. The elk on the other hand are much easier to hunt but you have to get into some bad country to get away from other hunters. Give me a yell when you get moved over and if I'm still around we'll do some shooting.

I used to live in Rhododendron, OR up by Mt. Hood. I know what you mean about the coast. Rough country. Its very similar to where I lived in SE Alaska except there are more roads in Oregon and it rains more in SE AK. When I was a kid we hunted down by Klamath Falls. I only went elk hunting one time in the wilson/trask area. I did a lot more fishing than hunting when I was younger.

I too was stationed in Petersburg for about a year and then 6.5 in Ketchikan. Then I went to Homer for 2 years. I liked SE much better.

There are lots of Coasties around here, lots of retired ones. Astoria is brutal, the jaws of the columbia are known for sinking boats. The Tillamook bay jaws although smaller have some of the nastiest currents I've seen. I watched them do some AST training out there one day. I was going to go into the AST program in 85 but somehow I ended up thinking volunteering for submarine duty in the navy was a good idea. N-A-V-Y Never Again Volunteer Yourself!

358429, what part of the blues are you in?

Do you know where the coldest place in the continental US is. I am 7 miles NW of there.

I spent 1/4 of the Cold War in the North Atlantic submarine fleet as a reactor operator, a few years later I got into electronic intelligence.

I got out of the service in 72, and headed straight off to Alaska. Being a policeman in Alaska, was a real adventure, I would not have traded that experience for anything. I also have to say that I enjoyed my time in the service.

My last boat was a brand new fast attack...our COB was a WW11 vet and this was his first nuclear powered attack boat, on our first shake down, I thought he was going to have to be restrained, he was "wound", all he could say was "If we had of had jut one of these during the war, we would really have shown the Japs...

your not too far from where I primarily hunt when I go over to the east side. by the way I had to look it up and they actually listed three spots, one inhabited and two not but all three are in the same general area.

Meacham supposedly holds the record for -50. Which is pretty common for Fairbanks in the winter.

I am within just a few miles of 5 million acres of national forest.

I used to go over and hunt the Cascades during the second archery season, that reminded me a bit of SE Alaska. My favorite spot over there was in the National Forest just up above Detroit, back when I went over there the deer were just thick.

I grew hunting the southern cascades along the western and southern border of crater lake park. I normally hunt silvies when I hunt the east side although I've done some hunting in sled springs, northside, high desert, paulina, fort rock and upper deschutes. What I looked up said Seneca had the lowest temp in 33 at 54 below but logan valley and crane prairie have both been colder but are not inhabited. I turn at the truck stop in Hines and head north up to the delentment area to hunt. I'm in Bend a few times a year, I used to live there but my back surgeon is there and I won't let anyone else touch me. It looks like surgery #8 is coming after the first, I have a torn disc that's extremely unstable so this will make 6 levels fused.

Back surgery is not a fun thing, and always something to be concerned about. You are wise to stick with a Dr., you like and trust.

I am pretty well settled into this area I have the Umatilla and the Wallowa Whitman national forests on my "door step". And it is just a short drive down to the Ochoco.

I wish you well with the next surgery..

Keep your powder dry, check your back trail often and watch the ridge line.

John

well your not too far away from me, I've got a son down there. He's going to the community college and plans to transfer to UofO. We aren't on speaking terms right now as he's too much like my ex but a smart kid.

I'm in Forest Grove. Just bought a .454 SRH and have been reading all kinds of stuff online. Trying to decide on a scope and what load I want to feed it. I used to have a scoped .44 SBH damn near 20 years ago when I lived in New Mexico but never really got into it. I've been getting the bug to try it again so here I am. Hope to make this site a regular stop and to meet some great people.

Yessir - fine rabbit and sage rat hunting. Was there just this April. Saw hundreds of deer - 20 to 50 or more to a herd. Great area. Your are lucky to live there.

Just joined. I live in Canby - just a few miles south of Portland. Not a lot of open land to shoot here unless you know someone with property. BLM land in the cascades an hour east. New owner of a GP100 .357. Haven't shot it much yet but like what I have experienced so far. Love to rabbit, sage rat and coyote hunt. Looking to expand my land access so if you guys have ideas or suggestions I am certainly open to it. I would especially like to cultivate a relationship with a farmer or such nearby who needs to have a critter problem remedied. I am 59, responsible: I leave gates as I find them and leave no trace of my visit.

I'm not too far from you, there is tons of public land here for deer and elk and alot of elk especially. The country sucks to hunt in unless your a water proof mountain goat but lots of elk.

Just got set up in Warrenton. Went out scouting today for archery elk. Saw a small herd of cows and calves. TONS of sign. Put out a couple cameras on well used trails.
