Anybody here got one the Rock Island .22 TCM 1911's. I think I am getting the itch for one for handgun varmint hunting. 40 gr 22 cal bullet at 2150 fps out of a 1911 and comes with barrel for 9 mm. My main concern is how accurate is it.

My cousin has one. He has been shooting it for almost 6 months now. He mounted a Burris FastFire III on his and has been getting 1" groups at 50 yards.

That sounds like acceptable accuracy for my purposes. I know that Jeff Quinn with Gunblast.com is evaluating one now and should have his report posted in a week or so.

It is looking like it will be my next gun.

It should make a great varmint hunting gun and the fact that it also has a 9 mm barrel is a plus in case problems with two legged varmints arise.

I just wish brass and dies were more readily available. My cousin actually made a set of dies and hase been cutting down .223 brass if I remember right.

Ballistically similar to the 5,7 but a good bit cheaper both in the gun and the ammo. Lots od innernet talk sayin it is a 9mm case necked down to 22 caliber, but that is incorrect. Case length is about 25mm and ya just cant streatch a 9x19 that far!

This is one of the few times that factory ballistics are realized in a cartridge as my example will actually get the advertised speeds with factory ammo.

The guns are full sized double stack 1911 frames and handle recoil with ease but the grip is somewhat large for my hand. I dont shoot them as well as single stack 1911 frames but I am impressed with the accuracy of the system. And it is a hoot to shoot!! Ammo is not any more costly than most other pistol ammo but a little harder to come by. I am with Larry in wishing brass and dies were more readily availiable.
I have spoken with Fred, the designer of the system and I believe that concern will be addressed soon.
The only down side I see now is the bullet selection applicable for the round is small.

I have not tried the 9mm barrel as it did not come with my gun...did not want the 9mm as I have little affection for it.

Once the dies are available, I am sure it will be a much more fun round. James Calhoun has a few light weight bullets that might be pretty fun to try ;^) I wish you guys luck with the dies and such. It's not uncoomon for new rounds to get a little slow with SAAMI and dies as the maker tries to recoup R & D with the sales of ammo.

the cost of the gun sure is attractive. At the prices I have seen, I might give some thought to drilling the frame for a proper scope mount ;^) I am really amazed at the videos I have seen, at the lack of recoil. And it would sure make a sweet Contender option. A little more zip than a 22mag, but a bit less than the 223. And I bet it would do better in wind than a 17hmr. Pretty cool little gun.

Looks like you can get dies from Hornady.

Cool, that will help a lot. If I remember right my cousin is handloading 30gr. or 33gr. Hornady V MAX Bullets with AA #9 Powder. I think he also tried some 40gr. Speer Spire Points, at least I know I gave him a partial box to try out, as well as some Hornady 45gr. Hornet Bullets.

I will tell my cousin that Hornady is marketing .22 TCM Dies as he has been having some issues with his home made dies.

I haven't had the opportunity to shoot his .22 TCM as yet but hope to in the not to distant furute. Yes he bought his mainly for Coyote Hunting.

This brings back memories of the .22Jet. There was not enough hearing protection to make that comfortable.

Let us know how you get on, it looks like it would make a great varmint round.

When the .22 Jet was introduced some one from S&W made a tour taking various game and some of it pretty big.

Looks interesting...

A review of the gun

Hank,

Not sure if you have seen this write-up?

Thanks

I have the gun and have shot it a bit, my only complaints involve the sights. First the lack of a white dot on the front sight wih the dots on the rear sight don't work with my old eyes to well. I have painted the front sight white and will see how that works for now and will probably install a night sight I have later.

Also the front sight seems to be a bit to tall since I had to adjust the rear to it's upper limit. My night sight is a bit shorter so that should work out.

Also the front sight was not centered on the slide, but with adjustable rear it is no big deal. I can also correct this when I install the night sight.

I haven't really nailed down how the accuracy is since I have only shot it off hand, but it appears to be ok.

Do you have the gun with the 9mm conversion kit?

That is the only way they sell it. There are 2 models, standard and target. The only differance is the type of adjustable rear sight. Price is same.

Sounds like the front sight is cut for the 9mm..

Don't know if you cast or not, but there are some very nice bullets to be had in .22 that would make that into a pretty versatile small game load.

I read a review on the gun and the chronograph results were within just a few fps of the manufacturers advertised 2100.

Once you get the "wrinkles" ironed out I bet that will be a pretty interesting round.

I shot this 3 shot group at 15 yds, but that is about as good as I can see with iron sights so I have ordered a mount for my Jpoint sight for further testing.
