I'm not familiar with a "pirate' barrel but if it's a heavy taper it won't be too bad, especially if you use pachmayr grips. If it's a standard pistol taper it will be snappy but still very manageable on that platform. The only thing is recoil is an individual thing. I just picked up a 4 3/4 FA 454 and with full house loads it's pleasant to shoot for me and 475 and 500 linebaugh revolvers are no biggie but others the 44 Mag is just about too much. I would suggest that unless you just want the lazer engraving you also check with MGM, their barrels are top notch.

I have both a Freedom Arms .454 and a .475.
Some people describe the recoil as the 454 having a sharp snap and the 475 more of a push. In shooting full house loads I can only tell the difference if I really focus on recoil. But usually I focus visually on my front sight and mentally on trigger press and let recoil be what it is. My 475 has a 4.75 inch barrel and I really like it.
For my 475 I load down to 22 grains of Lil Gun with a 400 LFNGC and get 1150fps.
Plenty enough for elk in the thick forests of Washington State. Good luck.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I can attest to the MGM barrels as well. I have a 14" 460 S&W barrel from them on my Encore, and it is sub MOA easily. Best 3 shot group at 100 yards so far is .534 with a 300gr xtp mag.

MGM will shoot lights out.

I have one MGM 30 30 for my contender and one bullberry 308 full bull barrel for my encore love them both of them , I was just wanting to try something new from someone new . Does no one like Gary reeder I thought he made top notch stuff also . I have seen several of his work at gun shows and gun shops around here and thought it looked like top of the line stuff as well but of courseI have never fired one so what y'all's opinion on Gary reeder encore barrels.

I've never heard any complaints about Gary Reeder or his work. I'm especially fond of his Mastodon configuration.

he's had his issues, there are some guys on here that won't buy any of his stuff and one in particular owned a half dozen or more of his barrels. He had a warranty issue with Gary so he sold every one of the barrels. I've heard alot of things and I've had my own negative experiences but I won't go into all of it. You may do just fine dealing with him.
