Here is a small Mule Deer buck I took with my AMT Hardballer, the load was a 240gr. Hensley and Gibbs bullet, cast in soft lead over 6.5 gr. of Unique. A 900+ fps load in my gun. Again complete penetration so no bullet for "show and tell".

The shot was at a paced 40 yards, the deer went about 100 feet and fell down dead.

Congratulations; looks like the type of country where you had to do some serious stalking to be successful with that rig.

I don't know where you are hunting but if in Colorado or Wyoming, the load you quoted would probably NOT make the required minimum power for big game.

The area I was hunting in is along the Columbia River in Oregon, Oregon does not have a power limitation just caliber. I had some other loads I was going to use, but I picked up the wrong magazine.

The loads I had intended to use were with the RCBS 270SAA bullet also at 900+, well above the standard .45 Colt load.

The result was the same.

The .45ACP has always been underloaded, there is a lot of potential there, as long as you stay within the 23K pressure range.

I guess the buck didn't know the difference.

In those places that have a "power" requirement, how do they enforce that. If they do not/cannot then it has no meaning.

All you have to do is read the regulations and then decide if you want to abide by the law or not.

I will not pretend that I am a law officer and tell you how I will enforce it; and also I will not argue with you on whether or not the law, as you say, maybe "has no meaning."

Nice hunt there. And like every law you might get by it for 20 years but it just takes one officer at any point to stop and check things out. Kind of like the saying "wrong place at the wrong time".

My point on the power issue is: That having been a career law enforcement officer, it would be difficult to enforce. And having spent 30+ years in the criminal justice system, I am more than a little familiar with the rules of evidence.

The state troopers charged with enforcing the game regulations here in Oregon, do carry scales to check bow weights.

However to verify some ones ammunition capabilities, you would need to have a chronograph and ballistics tables, and that opens up a number of difficulties. Unless there is a requirement to use factory ammunition, and you have the box with the load information on it.

It is nice to say that everyone is of good conscience, and will abide by the law, but as and old policeman I know that is not the case. If you cannot enforce a law it will be ignored, just look at all the enforceable laws that are ignored, like speed limits!
