I sold my contender to a new contender lover. What new pistol? Maybe a ruger redhawk hunter?

I would say, good choice my friend. You can't go wrong with a work horse like that. A great gun.

Redhawk is a great revolver. There is not much that you can`t do with that gun....

campbellkids

I have had Redhawks since the 80s, I do not think it is possible to wear one out in a single person's life time.

I just wish they were available in more calibers.

What would be the caliber? I love 45 colt, but am thinking about the 44 mag. I do not want anything bigger than that.

Oh don't cheat on your true love now. There is nothing the .429 can do that the .452 cannot do better ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

There are inherent problems the .45 Colt has that the .44 mag. does not. Most (commercial) guns chambered in .45 Colt have over sized chambers (not a problem with Freedom Arms guns), with higher pressure loads the case swells, contracts and after just a few shots, work hardens to the point that the cases split. The commercial .44 mag., guns do not suffer from this problem. The .45 Colt is notorious for having tight throats, a detriment to real accuracy, again a trait not as common in the .44 Mag.

I have a fairly nice collection of handguns, and most of them are chambered in .45 Colt.

With the bullets/loads available today, the difference in the two loads .44/.45 is pretty much like beauty, it lies in the eye of the beholder.
