In October I bought a used E.A. Brown BF 22lr on Gunbroker. When I picked up the gun at the local gunshop someone asked " What do you do with it?". I responded it is a target pistol intended for accuracy at distance. " How far?" they asked. I said " 100 yards I suppose". Then someone chimed in "Can you imagine shooting a squirrel at 100 yards with a pistol?!". They had a good laugh.
I am sure everyone here knows the folly of shooting animals at distance with a handgun. I made it my post deer season goal to shoot a squirrel at 100 yards. Last weekend I scoped the gun with a 3x-9x Burris and shot it at 50 yards with some target and standard velocity ammo.

This weekend I tried some high velocity hollowpoints. While not as accurate as the target ammo, it was accurate enough for field use. It was a clear afternoon yesterday and the squirrels were moving. I sat in my deer stand on the back 40 and planned to snipe some of the squirrels that distract me while I deer hunt. After about 30 minutes the woods settled down and the squirrels hit the ground. I started with a 71 yard shot;bang flop. Then I aired it out on one I just knew was a 100 yards away, no hit. The squirrel didn't spook and resumed his scampering. So far, the hardest part of long range squirreling is finding a squirrel that will stay still where I can see it to shoot it. Well this guy stopped in the middle of a logging road. I dialed the scope to 7x and held some Kentucky elevation. After the crack of the shot I look for him and there he is flippety- floppety. Another squirrel barks, I reload and roll that one at 63 yards. I just knew I had my 100 yard shot but it lasered 93 yards.

A little more shooting, some more hunting and I think I will get that 100 yard squirrel.

I carried my FA 22 out of the house the other morning, but left it in the truck - shoulda carried it to the stand, as that was the only fur I saw! After Jan 1st, the squirrels are primary target. Well, that and the hogs

Congrats! You nailed it when you said it's not the long shot that's hard to make; it's the little fellows sitting still long enough. Those little grays are worst than Cramer on lattes!

Very impressive. here out west with prairie dogs, 100 yards is pretty easy. But the targets are twice as big, and when on their mounds you can line up the shot, pour a cup of coffee and have a smoke while you dial in the shot ;^)

I got alil over 100yd squirrel with the buckmark 14" barrel and 3-9x rifle scope...yet I miss deer all the time..lol

I am not a squirrel hunter but do enjoy spending time in a good Gopher patch sniping Flickertail Gophers with a good .22 LR Handgun.

I started hunting squirrels in 1959, and have continued to hunt them almost every year up through this year. A 93 yard squirrel kill requires a superb gun and scope, superb ammo and superb shooting. Congratulations.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I wish I had something to brag about when I take my Single Six, but my squirrel hunting with the sixgun isn't nearly as productive.

Nice shooting. I think squirrl are a great way to hone your hunting skills. "Focus on the front site" they say. But what about that little guy down range doing the can-can? They are easier to find than deer, but lots harder to hit.
I have a good friend who did the stupid thing and cut off (off) his right thumb, ring, and pinky fingers on a table saw. Yeah, he is right handed. So he has limited feeling and use in his middle figer, and a little better in his pointer finger. There just arnt' to many guns you can shoot right handed with out right fingers, but I had one. It's on loan now, until he regenerates some fingers.
I found this pup at a pawn shop and ended up paying 240 otd. Pretty cool little shooter:

It is a Beeman .22lr single shot 'free pistol'. It shouldn't have the scope, but it does, just a single power. While this shot was only 35 yards, I did it without my thumb, ring, nor pinky on the gun. This gun is cool, an able bodied guy can hold the gun at his side, barrel down, and let go. The gun will not drop, it holds onto your hand as you hold onto it. Just what the doctor ordered.
Then my other squirrl terror is this little 8" barreled Tracker in .17hmr. I've shot clays (on the gound, not moving) with iron sites at 110 yards. It is point blank. That's a cool little round.
