...came into my sights this p.m. when I was making the horse pasture rounds; noting the fence repairs I needed to do. This lil' guy was off in the pasture mousing, and as I pulled my F-150 to a stop he never looked up. Out came the bean bag and then my Contender .223 and he never knew what hit him at about 120 yards.

What bullet are you using? Hows the pelt damage? Aaron

What bullet are you using? Hows the pelt damage? Aaron Aaron, I am still using my time proven 50 grain Hornady SX and the entrance is not noticeable on this pretty much broadside shot but the exit is not pretty and much sewing would be needed for the fur market. The .223 with this bullet is way too much for these little 8 to 12 pound foxes. Sounds like maybe you are serious about the furs, as I was some years back... This is a good bullet for the heavier built coyotes.

I wouldn't say that I'm serious about the furs, but I would hate to shoot a beautiful cat, fox, or yote and make a mess of it. I don't sell any fur. Once upon a time I shot a fox with my encore in 223. I used a sierra 52gr HPBT match. It didn't do enough damage even though it was only 15-20 FEET away.

Sounds like it might have just penciled through? The Hornady SX stands for Super eXplosive. That is why it works good on the heavier coyotes as it usually blows up inside and doesn't exit. Whereas that bullet won't stay completely inside the tiny fox on a broadside shot.

Whereas that bullet won't stay completely inside the tiny fox on a broadside shot. It was facing me. I shot in the middle of the chest. The bullet didn't exit. The fox ran every bit of 100 yards. I can still remember its tail bouncing over the tundra. I thought that I missed until I walked up to where it was standing. Big blood trail all the way to him. I wouldn't shoot another with the match king. Tough task to find a bullet that will reliably take coyotes and not ruin a fox. Aaron

Gregg, you're not going to have a hat made out of him, right?

Gregg, you're not going to have a hat made out of him, right? Nope; I have other plans for these two fox hides; ie. $$$ in my pocket.
On the other hand though, if I wanted to I would...except I would do it myself rather than quote: "have a hat made out of him..." by someone else.
Oh and BTW I have an order from my taxidermist for one prime coyote which he will buy and of course in turn mount it for a client. I intend to fill that order in short order...

Good. I think everyone around here thinks that coyotes are going to be high this year because I don't see many around these days. They went pretty good last year and I should have dumped all of mine. Maybe if the get up around $75 this year I'll get them out of the freezer and say good bye. Might get enough to get the 454 fixed.

Cool. I know; it does get old having a freezer full of varmints! Especially if you are married.

Good shooting, it is nice to see a red, all of ours died from mange a few years ago and now the hawks have to eat all the mice. Ihit one with my 223 contender and almost cut him in half and he could still run 30 mph with a snow machine chasing him.

Gregg also has Silver's in his neck of the woods. When I lived up that way, I had a neighbor that used to put out cat food, so the reds and silvers would come in and eat, and play with her cats. Some crazy stuff there.
