Of these factory loads that I have which would be the best for whitetail, and which would be the best for mountain lion for use in my Super Blackhawk?

Here is what I currently have on hand:
Remington 240 gr. semi-jacketed hollow point (.44 Mag)
Remington 240 gr. semi-jacketed soft point (.44 Mag)
Remington 210 gr. semi jacketed hollow point (.44 Mag)
Eldorado 240 gr. "Starfire" semi jacketed hollow point (.44 Mag)
Winchester 210 gr. "Silvertip" Hollow point (.44 Mag)
Federal 240 gr "Hydra Shok" Hollow Point (.44 Mag)
Winchester 200 gr. "Silvertip" hollow point (.44 Special)

The Remington 240 grain JHP opens up rather dramatically. It is very good on thin-skinned game.

I killed both my mountain lions with .44 Mag. 240 gr. JHP's and that's what I recommend. I have used the same on numerous whitetails and similar size game.

When I began handgun hunting I used a 44 mag & had quite a bit of success with the 240 gr. Starfires. They create a lot of tissue damage on deer size game.

Rem. 240 gr. HP. Killed about 20 deer with it. Expands well, creates a lot of damage.

The one YOU shoot the best. But I would prefer the 240 jhp to shoot the best

Any of them would kill the cat. Cats aren't all that hard to kill. A full frontal shot on the lion would be best so you don't blow a bunch of hide off the other side of him.

Another vote for the Remington 240 for deer. No experience on cats so I couldn't give an opinion.

I also vote for the Rem. 240 JHP. I've used it to take everything from woodchucks to elk. Although it wouldn't be my first choice for elk it worked perfectly the one time I used it for elk.

Recovered Remington .44 240 gr. JHP from a cow elk. I was pretty impressed with this bullet on large game. It held together perfectly and penetrated about 24-26 inches on a quartering away shot, lodging under the skin on the off shoulder. It retained 75% of it's original weight. The elk ran about 50 yards and piled up.

I loaded up a batch of ammo and loaned a barrel to a good friend several years ago that was going cat hunting. He wanted something that would fully penetrate the cat without doing huge amounts of damage....and I had just the right Contender barrel for him. I loaned him a 10" 32-20 Winchester "stoaked" with a 115gr Penn FN cast bullet over W231 (chrono'd at 1100fps). It did PERFECT. Fully penetrated on a broadside shot, the cat jumped, ran 50yds and piled up.

Would the 300gr. XTP from Hornady be too much for deer out of the 44 mag.?

I don't think so. Hornady's load is pretty modest from a velocity standpoint and there is a good chance the bullet doesn't open, but it'll kill deer.

hi everyone,
since I've never put together any 44 mag bullets yet does anyone have any ideas on the crimp. tapered or rolled ? I have
used crimped bullets on my rifles but not sure about revolvers.

A good roll crimp will keep those slugs at home until they are needed.

Rod, too.

hi everyone,

Is it true about the 50% tax on ammo, I heard that they were talking about it in the news? I mean a tax on every bullet. If in fact this is true is it nation wide or in NY ? I heard it was the lead and considered hazardous material. Cheeezzzeee whats next.

300 gr. XTP in .45 Colt at 1100 fps worked perfectly on mountain lion for me. End to end penetration. One of three bullets recovered, other two somewhere in intestines. Full mushroom expansion, little weight loss. Can't say about the .44 Mag but 12 gauge at 2000 fps with 300 grain isn't "too much" if Hornady is to be believed. Expansion from 850 fps to 1800 fps is reported by Hornady for 300 grain XTP. Probably in ballistic gelatin so real work experience may vary. Black bear fall to the .44 Magnum 240 grain Hornady XTP in 24 Hour Campfire blogs are to be believed.
