Looking for suggestions on a small game 22 for a project gun.
Ruger single six?
SW 22A?
Ruger MKIII?

Im leaning towards Single Six.

I vote for the MKIII. I got the hunter version, put a leupold 4X scope on it, and shoot lights out at 50 yards and under. Head shots on squirrels and rabbits are no problem.

I have a 22/45 MkII and it also shoots great, with the little Optima it will put a whole mag inside an inch @ 25 yards without really trying hard. They are easy to scope as well if you really want to get serious about long range.

Rod, too.

I have a 22/45 too. With a red dot. Shoots great. I really like those grips on the one in the above photo.

Here's a link to a .22 I just ordered, it should be fun to hunt with. Won't break the bank either.

One more vote for the Ruger semi-auto. I prefer the Mk. II to the Mk III, but that's a personal choice. Every Ruger semi-auto .22 I've owned over the years has been extremely accurate.

I have the S&W 22a and love it, I have hunted rabbits with it and have found it to be plenty accurate for it, I've also taken a couple squirrels as well as very many armadillos while out and about. It also comes with the rail on top so optics are easily added. I also carry it on my trapline so a few other critters have fallen to it as well, just not in a hunting sense

I did give it a try with an optic but think I would prefer a different red dot than the one I had on hand.

Single Six and a K-22 here. No semis for hunting in PA

If your going for a revolver I'd go for the Single Ten in 22LR or Single Nine in 22WMR. They obviously hold more rounds but they are cartridge specific instead of being a convertible.

Just picked up a Ruger 22/45 last week. What ammo have you guys been running in yours? Also bought another FA 97 in 22 it likes the Winchester ammo but the Ruger not so much.

Wheelguns, my 22/45 mkII likes the federal copper plated 550 count that used to be able to be bought at Walmart. Can't find any 22lr now.

Thanks KRal I'll go check out Walmart and see what they have. Anyone else have a preference in ammo?

I've always been a big fan of 22mag. Its a lil more expensive than lr, but my vote goes for a wheelgun in 22mag. I just picked up a Ruger Single 9, and hopefully will take it for a spin this wknd. I'll let you know how she does.

I did an experiment a little while back that I found interesting. The test fire was my Henry Golden Boy and I had already eliminated all ammo aside from the federal 550ct bulk packs and the CCI Mini Mags. These two were the most accurate in various 22 rifles and handguns I'd used them in through the past few years so I decided to run them head to head. I don't have my notes with exact numbers but velocities were in the range 1250fps. Accuracy was almost identical between the two rounds with the Federal having a slight edge. The interesting part was when I started running strings through the chrono. The velocity spread with the CCI was running near 50 fps and they were up and down with little consistency. The federal was under 10 fps with most shots within 1 or 2 fps of eachother. I have several hundred rounds of CCI I had bought for hunting and to get the most out of the high end Henry when I bought it so I was just as astonished to find out my cheap ammo was actually a better performer than the expensive stuff. At the time I was paying around 8.00 per hundred for CCI and 13.00 for 550rds of the Federal. Anyways just something to think about.

I am running the "Remmington Golden Bullet" through my MKIII and getting ragged holes out to 35 yards off a rest. They come in a bulk pack of 525 rounds, and I think it was somewhere around $20 for the box.

It has been my "go to" round in all of my 22's. Even in my rifle, it was the most accurate.

Raptor, that's the bullet I use in my FA 97 and Ruger Bearcat. These two preferred the Remington's over the Federal's.

I would vote for Ruger autos, but I just got a 22LR barrel for my Contender, it will around 1" at 100yds, love it.

I've never cared much for any of the Remington ammo but more so their centerfire stuff. Just depends on the gun.

I love my 22/45 after some trigger, hammer and sear drop in parts by Volq. Have shot cci mmg, cci standards and wichester m22( bulk) and wolf, all quality but I found CCI to give me the least amout of dispersion and being cleanest.

If you get a 22/45 get the one with the removable grips, If you have large hands you will want thicker grips, well JMHO, I backed my panels with 2mm foam for now until I send it out to get some custom ones made.

Though I still want a single action 22, ugh to many projects

Roger that. I even went so far as to mill the sides flat on my MkII 22/45 for 1911 grip panels so it would fill the hand better.

It was well worth the effort.

I shoot a MKIII for small game. Ammo is dependent on availability right now and not neccesarily on favorite load. I like cci mini mags for hunting but used federal HV match last weekend. I put a head shot on one that got hung up in a fork. Took six more before I got it nocked out. I definetly missed my mini mags then. I just mounted a millet red dot I had on the ruger and I like it. Had to find another mode of carry and found a binocular case at academy with a nice wide padded strap that goes up and around the shoulder and two smaller straps that go down from there and around the sides. Has enough room for the ruger plus a couple boxes of ammo and extra mag. Tried it out last weekend and it carried well even with a couple creek crossings requiring a hop skip and a jump it didn't flop around too much.

Looks like ruger could do something about those grips on the 22/45. They have to know they are very BAD. Other than the grips I like mine.

I think something is up with mine. Tried several different brands, about the best i've gotten so far is 1 1/4" and thats at 20 yards not my typical 25 yard range. Any ideas what might be the problem?

I feel you pain. Last summer I bought a new 22/45 Lite and a Gemtech suppressor for it. My intention was to use it for squirrel hunting and not have to use my hearing protection; and just plink with it cause the cool factor is way high. I have a 2X Nikon mounted on it and have shot multiple different sub sonics and super sonics through it with no pleasing results. At first I thought it may be the suppressor that was causing accuracy issues, but after testing, was actually more accurate with it attached. I can't even get 3" groups at 25 yards from a bench. My old 22/45 will shoot lights out. I can get better groups at 50 yards and iron sight with it than I can with the Lite at 25 yards and scoped. I'm not giving up on it just yet, but it has been disappointing. Maybe I can diagnose the problem or it might just be a lemon.

what kind of shape is the crown in? I've seen guns with a damaged crown when it's threaded for a suppressor or brake.

KYODE i've tried Winchester,Remington,and Federal.

Rod the crown looks fine so i don't think it's that.

I don't know maybe i'm expecting to much of the gun. The little 5 1/2" FA's 97 i just bought will easily hold a 1/4" to 3/8" group at 25 yards. I'd be happy if the Ruger held 3/4" to 1" group at 25 yards.

i don't think so! it should do what you expect to be happy with at least, maybe even better. wolf match target, federal american eagle 38gr cphp, winchester dynapoints, and cci mini mag hp's are what have shot well for me in rugers and a couple others. there are several other ammos tried without as much luck. maybe you are just an ammo trial away.

The gun should definitely shoot better than that. You might consider sending it in. The only thing I've ever had to fix on them is the action but even with the actory action it should do better than that.

I have several 22's for hunting, lately been running the single six hunter.Scoped with a 2x6 bushnell elite. The other single six is the with the 5.5 barrel, both just got trigger jobs, and glad I did them.My 617 is my primary trapping dispatch gun, another accurate revolver. In the semi-auto's I like my Browning buckmark hunter, as well as the Ruger MKIII hunter. No glass on the Ruger yet.Gregg, I have that same dot on a S&W 22a.Shooots great! Never a problem with that cheap pistol.
