What are the best grips for a Blackhawk? I just bought a 10.5 stainless with factory grips. They are pretty but not comfortable when shooting. The fac grips seem too slick also, it is like I am going to drop the pistol when I am lining up a shot.

Pachmayrs are a bit smaller in profile than Hogues ,so try both and see which fits your hand better. I have and use both but the Pachmayrs fit me a touch better. Both are excelent grips!!!
My 10.5 in wears Hogues, most others Pachs.

I had John Gallagher remove the hook on my SBH

Just got my mitts on this great piece of claro walnut. Going to use it for a couple of sets of custom grips for my revolvers.

Pachs will help with the recoil but you want the grips on a single action and particularly a plow handle to be slick. They are designed to roll in your hand to take some of the load off your wrist. You can get checkered grips but they will tear up your palms.

Who makes a slightly oversize (from factory size) grip for the super blackhawk? Ive got houge, pachs, houge laminated, and factory grips. Not 100% happy with any of them. I need something that fills my hand a lil better than the factory panels, but not a huge as the houge laminated.

you'll probably have to go custom. You might even experiment with the hogue laminates if your not going to use them anyways. Just start sanding them down until they fill right. getting the finish back on them isn't too hard. you can use tru oil or just furniture oil. I use those at times but mostly I use carnuba car wax and buff the grips real good. Puts the shine back on them and protects them from water.

Ohh, that is some perty stuff. Will look fine on either SS or blued.

I found the hogue grips on the ruger homepage. How are these to use.

I haven't gone to their website but if it's the Hogue rubbers they do fine, I personally don't like anything but smooth wood on a SA but that's just me. The 44 is a pretty mild caliber and most guys I see getting beaten up by them are holding them wrong, too high on the grip and the gun rotates and bites. Most problems can be solved by adjusting your grip and learning to work with the recoil instead of against it. If you have any inkling of ever playing with the true big bores you'll find that your grip is very important and I've never seen anyone ruin a custom Ruger with rubber grips, not to mention they don't work well and the pachmayrs on the FA's are butt ugly. Everyones recoil limit is different but I think by working on your grip first you may fix the problem. If it's the hogue wood then some fill your hand better but all the wood grips are still going to transfer the recoil

one way to see if your holding too high is the position of your pinky on your gun hand, even on the larger SBH grip frame my pinky is off the grip. I have large hands but not huge. On a standar plow handle I curl up my pinky and rest the butt of the gun on it, just don't do than with your hand on a hard surface or you'll be drinking like a fairy for a while. Your pinky should be almost off if not off the grip if your holding the gun right. Also learn to relax your grip just enough so the gun rolls but not so much it bites you or comes out of your hand, guys that use a death grip normally get beat up pretty bad because their arms and wrists are rigid, that may keep you from getting a sight between the eyes but on a heavy hitter you'll start feeling it all the way up to your shoulder, with the 44 your hand and wrist will probably get fatigued and sore.

Thanks, i do shoot with my pinkie curled under. I have shot lots of plow handles. I just don't like the too smooth grips. I will probably order some nice stag grips.

I personally don't like taking any fingers off the grip, and with the Hogues or Pachs you don't have to. With the filler behind the trigger guard they effectively lower your grip and position your hand lower and straighter in line with the recoil forces, and all of my fingers stay on the grips.

Thanks for all your comments. I have a new view on shooting my 10.5 SBH.

I used to have a SBH 7.5" that I used over sized Hogue grips on. They make the gun very comfortable to shoot two handed, but cocking the gun and shooting it one handed is very difficult.

I've been real happy with the Hogue monogrip on my SBH 7.5 inch.
Just didn't feel like enough handle when I shot with the wood factory grips on it.

Is this a removal of the square back trigger guard? If so can anyone post a picture? I did not find one on his website or a price listing for this modification.

I sold my SBH Hogues and put the factory grips back on. Letting the gun roll is much more comfortable for me.
