Just wanted to say hello i have read the forums for awhile sense last year and began practicing distance shots with my s&w28 357. well this upcoming hunting season i decided i was gonna go all out. I just recently Bought a Ruger Super Blackhawk with the 10.5 barrel.Ordered a scope mount i need to have my gunsmith drill and tap my pistol for. Was thinking about ordering a wolf trigger kit form midway do you guys have any thoughts on that? the biggest dilemma i have is i cant seem to find a holster to fit this monster. Was wondering if you guys had any recommendations or knew where i could get one. All help or advice in general would be great thanks.

If your taking it in for drilling of the mount holes you might have them do an action job while they are at, just make sure the guy is competent and has experience with the Rugers. The springs alone will make a huge difference but it's only half way to a full action job. The springs will drop the weight but the sear work is what will make it break clean without any creep. I really don't know who to recommend for just that work other than Jack Huntington and Bowen. I've had guns with so called action jobs in my shop from some of the hot shot shops in the handgun world and their work was crap. I'm having back surgery on Monday so I'm out of the loop right now but the action job is the one thing that will make the biggest difference in your shooting.

As for the hoster, many on this board like leather holsters, and for good reason--they are great. However,I have always liked the Uncle Mike's shoulder holster for scoped wheels and single shots. They aren't as pretty but less expensive and plenty durable. They can be a little loud when stalking thru a briar patch, but not bad.

I have an Uncle Mike's shoulder rig I have been using for years specifically for revolvers with optics mounted topside.

Well thanks for all the advice guys. Ill look at the uncle mikes holster I prefer leather two and found one company who makes them. Pistol packing inc. I have a friend who makes custom kydex one also thought about maybe that route with some shoulder straps. Ill see who I can find about the action job my friend/ gunsmith does all my work usually, plus worked for our local Rutgers for a couple years. So he's probably capable just lacks to tools to drill and tap it.

Don't get me wrong, but I like a fine leather holster as much as the next guy. I was just saying that my Uncle Mikes hoster has served my well over the years. I only use it when the revolver I am using has an optic on it.

Get it drilled and tapped for a Weigand base. Then you have a better choice of ring spacing

Lol dont mind spending money if its for a good cause. I probably will pick up an uncle mikes until i can find something better. The weigand mount is the one i ordered read some reviews it appears to be the best. Probably gonna get a Leopold scope too.

The weigand mount is the one i ordered That is a great base. If you are at all handy it is an easy DIY to D&T for it. I have the drill and tap, can send it to you if you wanna give it a try.
Rod, too.

Welcome to HHM, Loupis.
As Wapitirod says, the action job is really going to help a lot if done correctly. I had Rod do one on my custom Ruger .475 Linebaugh he built; plus I have done my own on a couple. Now it is "tough" for me to shoot a "factory" trigger, as I am spoiled.
Keep us posted on your gun work, and your hunting prowess.

Another question for you all, should I just buy a Bisley hunter and not scope mount the sbh? Or will the extra couple inches really help with accuracy and bullet velocity?

Wow! That really opens it up!! YESS buy the hunter. You will love it. The extra barrel won't make it any more accurate when using optics anyway, and the extra velocity won't make a difference at reasonable revolver distances. Try both. Hold both. Believe it or not... some actually preffer the standard to the bisley.(i'm one of them) I love my Standard hunter in 45, and I don't even use optics on it... MN

It sounds like your budget might be loose enough to consider moving up. I recommend that you at least look at a Freedom Arms revolver before buying another Ruger. Nothing wrong with owning both --- many of us do. However, you will likely eventually get the FA fever. No need not to start now. LOL
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

i second the freedom arms recommendations as well. it'll take a bit based on their backlog but they sure are worth it, that's why i have several. also don't overlook the bfr.

No unfortunately you would still have to pay extra to get a trigger job. I own seven FA's and have a hard time picking up and shooting my other guns. The Rugers and Smiths get pretty lonely.
Before i bought new i would check around for a used one.

I'd also keep in mind a nice custom Ruger, the actions when done right are every bit as tight as the FA but smoother.

Or, you can pick up a new BFR for about $800.00 -- just sayin'! That said, you can find a nice used FA for about $1,200.00 or so.

No unfortunately you would still have to pay extra to get a trigger job. I think this is rediculous for a $2,000+ gun. It should have a trigger worth the cost.

I would suggest getting the rugers you want first, then later get a FA. If you start out with the FA, it's likely you'll never get those rugers.

(VBG) Why, yes, Kingfisher, I am an enabler...but I'm just trying to pass on the good deals that I find... And to think, I didn't own a single FA nor XP when I first joined this forum...and now, well, let's just say I've re-evaluated my retirement age! Loupis - welcome! My suggestion is simple - get your trigger worked on, scope your existing gun, and carry it every time you go afield. You'll rack up experience, take game, and get hooked on handgun hunting. Delay that first purchase on a custom 5-shot or 6-gun...because once you start, you'll be planning the next. And the FA-itis is STRONG - shop the forums and the auction sites. I've bought all of mine used, for far less than MSRP. Take that back - they're awful. Stay away from the auction sites...but let us know if you find a good deal, so we can make sure no one else makes that mistake

James originally corrupted me with tales and pics of a 10" Casull with a 2.5x8 Leupold. That was my first FA (and in a strange turn of events, I just bought another one just like it except a Premier grade)...gulp, a BUNCH more have followed since, from 22 to .500. KRal, GlennS, and Darrell H have been "influential" in this department.
GAsixgunner introduced me to SSK barrels, and took single shots to a new level for me.
Wvhitman, Dan B, bfr4570, nmhunter, and Ernie contributed to my XP delinquency...
So now, I just try to give back where others have contributed so much

Hahaha. Don't by a FA!
If you do, many more will follow. There are great deals out there on used FA guns if you look. Having said that, I will tell you this. I had a few 10" rugers. One in particular was a nice stainless gun with a TSOB mount and sling studs with a 4x scope. I did the action work etc and this gun would shoot! 2" or less groups at 100 yards from the bench with a 315 grain cast slug were routine. I bought a 10 FA in 44. Didn't have time to shoot the FA for a while and a buddy kept bothering me wanting the ruger. Well I very well didn't need it since I had the FA, right? Wrong, I NEVER got the groups from the FA that I did from that ruger. It shot very well and I killed several animals with it but I wanted my ruger back :). Either one will suit your needs, one is just a little fancier. The stainless 10" rugers in my opinion are some of the finest shooting sixguns ever made regardless of price.

Alright gonna stick with my SBH for now get the action tuned shoot it a bit and maybe get a bisley. Have to see how I feel after this hunting season to see if I can justify triple the cost on a FA for what seems to not be a lot of added benefit other the bragging rights lol.
