When the panic buying ends. I drove 40 miles one way Tuesday to buy all the Large Pistol Magnum primers Gander Mountain had. I drove home with 300 and was happy to have them.

I'm not sure that we will see an end this time. They are going to be fussing about gun control for at least the next 4 years.

I agree, this time is different. There was a brief slow down about two or three weeks after the shooting and since then it's gone through the roof. The thing is this time there is a much better reason for it.

Yup, and depending on what the Feds do and don't, there are going to be lots of state battles, as evidenced by NY. Toss in the UN arms treaty and I think that this is going to be a pretty long haul.

I only see a coupe of upsides. The first is the mid-term elections in two years, and the second the possibility that now it looks to be more of a long term proposition, perhaps some new investors will want to get into the game making supplies.

Craig,

The mid-term elections may be double-edged sword. Look at last November. I do not have much faith in our population "throwing out" the gun control liberals. Hopefully, we can hold on to the House. Without that the outlook is bleak, especially considering the likely appointment of two Supreme Court Justices by our current "leader."

Went to a Bass Pro Shop a couple weeks ago and the shelves were almost bare of reloading supplies. They had only three cans of powder, very few bullets and primers. The place was a mad house, reminded me of Christmas shoppers.

I betting that Ginsburg and Kennedy will depart soon. Hopes that Scalia will hang in there for us. So we might be OK in terms of the current rulings, but talk about the lost opportunity for the long term. And no question about the midterms being two edged, I just hope enough of them have been there long enough to remember what happened after 1994.

I looked and looked and finally found some stuff that didn't say backordered when I went to pay for it. The box came yesterday. I got the 50 count ammo cases, nothing else. I looked at the ticket thinking maybe they would be shipped factory direct. Nope, backordered! Dang it, they got me. Est delivery is 25 feb. Now I wait

yeah just hope that it comes in somewhere around there. Alot of the estimate delivery dates are way off, many by months.

Thad,

That sucks. It used to be that you sorta kinda count on if it showed in stock good chance you would get it. Lord only knows how long the order back-log itself is backed up at any point in time. I wonder if perhaps using the phone to call in orders might help with part of the lag?

Pretty hard to say what will happen. I have a reasonable supply of primers and powder, but my handgun bullet supply is hurting. Hate to put too much on back order for fear that it will show up all at once.

Smith & Wesson-is running at Full capacity making 300+
guns/day-mainly M&P pistols. They are unable to produce any more guns to help with the shortages.

RUGER: Plans to increase from 75% to 100% in the next 90 days.

FNH: Moving from 50% production to 75% by Feb 1st and 100% by March 1.

Remington-Maxed out!

Armalite: Maxed out.

DPMS: Can't get enough parts to produce any more product.

COLT: Production runs increasing weekly...bottle necked by Bolt
carrier's.

LWRC:Making only black guns, running at full capacity...can't
get enough gun quality steel to make barrels.

Springfield Armory: Only company who can meet demand but are
running 30-45 days behind.

AMMO: Every caliber is now Allocated! We are looking at a nation wide shortage of all calibers over the next 9 months. All plants are producing as much ammo as possible w/ of 1 BILLION rounds produced weekly. Most is military followed by L.E. and civilians are third in line.

MAGPUL is behind 1 MILLION mags, do not expect any large
quantities of magpul anytime soon.

RELOADERS... ALL Remington, Winchester, CCI & Federal primers are going to ammo FIRST. There are no extra's for reloading purposes... it could be 6-9 months before things get caught up. Sorry for the bleak news, but now we know what to expect in the coming months. Stay tuned, we'll keep you posted...

Related commentary from Bob Owens :
They didn’t know when they’d be getting anything back in stock,
from magazines to rifles to pistols. Manufacturers were running
full-bore, but couldn’t come close to keeping up with market demand.
It wasn’t just the AR-15s, the AK-pattern rifles, the M1As, and the
FALs that were sold out. It really hit me when I realized that the
World War-era M1 Garands, M1 carbines, and Enfield .303s were gone,
along with every last shell. Ubiquitous Mosin-Nagants—of which every
gun store always seems to have 10-20—were gone. So was their ammo.
Only a dust free space marked their passing. I’ve never seen anything
like it.

Every weapon of military utility designed within the past 100+
years was gone. This isn’t a society stocking up on certain guns
because they fear they may be banned. This is a society preparing for
war.

Interesting how that annotation is being brought up by both writers and "talk show hosts."

Well that sucks, I should have saved my money on the reloading stuff. I've got the kit, but can't do a dang thing with it. That money could have gone to something else. Live and learn:

FYI- don't buy a bunch of reloading stuff right before the largest ammo/component shortage in our history!

Buy what you can, when you can.

For most cartridges there are multiple powders that can be used, so even if your first choice is powder 'A' you may still be able to get by with powder 'B'.

Irrespective of where you stand on the Jacketed vs Hard Cast issue, a cast projectile is miles better than no projectile at all. A mould, a melting pot, lube, and plenty of wheel weights.

It wasn't that long ago when all hunting was done with what you could get rather than what you'd prefer.

Praise the Lord! I bought two pounds of H110 today for $32.00 each. It was all the shop had.

I found an 8lb bottle of H110 and snapped that up, along with all of the Large pistol primers they had left.

Need to head back out next week and see if I can find a couple of lbs of 231 for my .45 and Varget for the 223.

Thankfully at this point I am stocked up on primers. Would probably take me a few years to burn through all of the primers I have right now.

Luckly one or two of the stores here seem to be able to get things at least on order, might take a week or two but you get your supplies.

One even manages to have ammo on the shelf.

One of the few good things of living in California, the population of gun owners is not nearly as high as it is in other areas.
