I had another misfire yesterday at the hunting camp while testing new loads in my 45-70. I think I will try at different primer than CCI. I was shooting my 45-70 and had one misfire out of 15 rounds I reloaded. I pulled the bullet and pushed the primer out. I then put another primer in the case and it fired fine. I checked the primer that failed dimensions and could not find anything wrong. I checked the primer pocket and it was same as other rounds fired. Is there anything else to check? I will try winchester primers once available. I have had too many misfires with the CCI primers. Can't take the chance when it matters.

I found something interesting on Mike Bellm's page. It suggested you change the hammer springs perodically on a contender. I have never change my hammer spring before and I have had the gun for 20 years or so. I ordered some springs and will change them in both my guns. I am still changing the primers I use. I do not have full confidence. I had same problem with my ruger and it was the hammer spring as well.

How often do you change your hammer springs in contender and super ruger redhawks?

Sucks that you lost confidence in your set up. I've never had a cci fail to ignite. I don't have a tender but I do have an encore and I changed out the hammer spring when I got it and haven't had a misfire, yet. Changed out the spring probably 6-7 years ago.

Could it be a high primer?

Some years ago I was having misfire problems with a batch of CCI Small Rifle primers. I wrote CCI and they had me send them some for inspection. They wrote me back and said that particular lot/run had an under-sized primer pellet. They apologized and replaced all of those I owned from that batch.

A few years ago I got into a bad batch of cci small pistol primers that failed in several guns and would not buy cci for years. Now you have to take what you can find but I still use Winchester instead of cci when I can.

Deerdad, sorry to hear about your troubles with CCI primers. Personally I have never had any problems with CCI primers. That is all I use.

Federal pistol primers are supposedly the most sensitive most of the guys I know use only Federal after their pistols get a trigger job or a lighter springset.

I use CCI rifle and Fed rifle primers. Had a misfire in my Contender primer showed an obvious light strike. Read the same info on Belms site and ordered new spring. I think he even has directions on installation. No problems since.

Deerdad, You may find what Bellm has to say about headspace in a contender informative also. The topic is listed couple times in the left margin of site. Good luck..
