Looking at an MGM 15" barrel for an Encore in this caliber. Have heard great things on it's ballistics, especially the 142gr. Sierras and Accubonds, and am interested in hearing opinions on performance on whitetails--especially @ 200-300 yards.
Input appreciated!

KF - love mine...haven't touched one off on a whitetail yet, but the hogs didn't fare too well with the 130 Accubond!

I've been running the 140 gr Berger's out of the long gun - fairly explosive on even thin-skinned smaller animals.

Doc (wvhitman) and Fanucci (gasixgunner) can give you some LONG range results on deer, mule deer, and African game. An extremely versatile caliber...I love the 6.5's, but this one is special

That kind of range is just getting it warmed up. I think Ernie has taken mulies to over 600yds with his McGowan 6.5x284.

Aaron, what caliber does Ernie NOT have an XP in??? LOL

I think what I have gathered so far is that the 6.5-284 is a TAKE???

Kingfisher, The gun shoots as good as it looks. Really hope to get something like it in the future. Once you handle and shoot the gun you have to have one. Its that good......

OK, James, you and Dur are TAG-TEAMING me now! If I get the 6.5-284 it will be the Encore for now, but one of these days another XP is going to put a strangle-hold on me like my 358 did (at least I don't sleep with it anymore)......
James, anyone ever tell you of your striking resemblance to one of our former Crimson Tide quarterbacks, Joe Willie Namath?

King, "Broadway Joe" was a New York hero in the day around here..
Remember seeing him in his full length fur coat. He sure knew how to play the game both ways. However, I wish I had his money then his looks...A friend in Jersey, James

I was also lucky enough to shoot SChunter's 6.5/284 this week end & it is totally awsome. It has the ability to reach out and touch something & with the break that Dur has on it, recoil is not a factor. GET A 6.5/284 !!!

You have NO idea the power of an XP-100. Animals will literally approach in awe and just lay down for pictures with them. It's truely amazing....and can be quite bothersome at the same time...they just follow like I'm the Pied Piper.

I've got a new one that has yet to be on display...does that make it more risqué?

Dan - is that the Kirby-built 7WSM?

6.5-284 is plenty adequate for the distances mentioned.

How good is the 6.5/.284? I've taken 304 deer with mine the last 4 years, about 40% with the 130 AB, about 2 dozen of those beyond 500 yards, about 95% of those with the AB. Here's a few more examples:
Red sheep, 234 yds, 130 AB

WV buck this year, 387 yds., 18", 130 gr. AB

SCI #2 Cape kudu, 201 yds, 129 gr. Horn. Interbond (only using ABs now)

That's a Brown Precision. They made two, then the mold broke. They don't intend to make any more. The other one is on my .325 WSM.
