At long last my 5-shot .500 JRH Super Redhawk built by Jack Huntington, the creator of the .500 JRH cartridge, arrived last Friday. I've never considered the Super Redhawk to be a "looker" but it has proven to be a reliable platform and I love the way it feels in my hands. This hunting revolver was designed to be a workhorse, not a showpiece.

I had some 400 grain WFNGC Cast-Performance bullets and some 410 Gr LFNGC bullets from Montana Bullet Works left over from previous experiments with my X-frame .500 S&W so I decided to shoot those first just to get a feel for the gun. Jack also sent me a couple of boxes of Buffalo Bore ammo which is a 425 grain cast load rated at 1350 fps.

The crimp groove to nose measurement of the 410 grain LFNGC bullets designed for the 500 S&W cylinder proved to be too long for the .500 JRH cylinder so immediately my bullet supply was cut in half.
\:\(
I fired the gun with the factory ammo as well as handloads that I had assembled with the 400 grain CP bullets using 296, IMR 4227, 2400, and Blue Dot. I shot it from the bench very little, I mainly shot it offhand and from my Precision Shooting Rest sitting on top of my Bog Pod tripod at distances up to 75 yards. It was a lot of fun ringing the steel target with the big gun!

After a weekend of shooting nearly 150 rounds with the new gun, my right hand is...shall we say "tender"?
Unfortunately, I'm out of bullets now but I placed an order with Montana Bullet Works earlier today. My goal is to find an accurate 440 grain cast bullet load with 296. I'll keep you posted...

Darrel, I think that's a rather "Robust" looking SR! Does it shoot as good as it looks?

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Darrel, that is a deadly looking package. I am sure that you will put it to good use! You certainly have a good collection of the SRH's!

Thanks guys! KRal, I shot it very little from the bench...mainly just enought to get the Ultradot sighted in (twice). On the first range session the Ultradot slid in the rings. I took it home, applied loctite to all of the ring screws, loaded up more ammo and tried again! So far so good, the Ultradot has stayed put. I was mainly just trying to get a feel for the gun so I loaded the 400 grain bullet with what I thought was a starting load for the gun with the powders listed above using 500 WE and 475 Linebaugh data as a reference. With "zero" load development, I was able to put all 5 shots into less than 2" at 60 yards with several powders. When I get my 440 grain bullets, I'll definitely work on accuracy.

SChunter, this one will definitley be with me the next time we meet up for a range session. Bring shooting gloves!

That turned out great, Darrell!! Congratulations! I worked up some really accurate loads in my first .500 JRH, if you are interested. Yes, that platform delivers a good blow to the hand!

I think it is both. Sweeet piece.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Thanks guys! Seasons, this one started out as a .44 Mag. Jack installed a new barrel and cylinder, reworked the action and trigger. The action is silky smooth and the trigger is incredible!

Jack will be starting my 500 in the coming months, very excited, but.

Allow me to pour a little gas on this thread:

SRHs make fine custom big-bore fodder! I applaud Darrell for cooking this one up as it looks to be a winner!
