Has anyone had their FA 83 coated in another color? If so what kind of finish, i.e. Cerakote, Robar, etc. and are you pleased with the results? Thanks

I have a stainless Redhawk in my possession that has that gray finish on it and not only does it look good, it's really durable -- this stuff was put on 25 years ago.

I might be proven wrong but the tolerances are so tight on those I'm not too sure that the additional material might not cause some function problems

Cerakote when done right is very, very tough. I've compared it straight up to big laquer finishes and it wasn't even close. The thing about cerakote is it's designed not just for guns but for stuff that gets a whole lot more wear and tear. Go to their website and you can see some of the stuff it's used on. As far as clearances it's hard saying, when done right it should only need to be about 1mil thick. I'll often coat a little heavier than that on exterior parts and then put a single light coat on the internals. There are options if tolerances are an issue such as not coating the gas ring or ratchet and the surface of the barrel facing the cylinder. As for colors they have more than you could imagine.

Years ago I had a S&W, blued J-frame hard chromed. Found it real hard to chamber the shells until I wire brushed the chambers with a drill. What I`am saying is if the tolerence changed with a Smith what would happen to a Freedom with their super tight fit.

depends on the thickness of the material.
