Has any one taken a 300 magnum encore rifle barrel, and had it cut down to 15 inches to use as a encore pistol with a muzzle brake? If so how do you like it ?

I have a converted 30-06 barrel that now fires 300 Win. that Rod ( Wapitirod ) did the work on. Haven't got to kill anything with it yet, but it is a hoot to shoot. Pretty dang accurate also. I am going to do some work with it starting this spring. Maybe work on some ground squirrels.

i had one that was 16.5" + the brake. jimmylee here has it now. i liked it, and i think he likes it as well. i traded it off as a total package for my 7br xp100, which i needed worse....lol.
it does make a really big handgun. if i were doing it again, i'd prefer to have one custom made as to have a nice tight chamber. i could not find a load to my liking until i tried hodgdons H1000 and 180gr sierra flat base bullets. i did take 2 deer with factory 180gr loads and talk about slammin a deer to the ground....lol.
Kentucky….no place like home.

How bad is the recoil on that 300 mag setup on a encore pistol. I shoot a 308 with out a muzzle brake on it, it's not that bad. I was wondering how much more recoil, would a braked 300 win mag have?

I know it's not apples-to-apples, but I had a 300 Win Mag MR Lone Eagle 15" braked and the percussion was worse than the recoil. Recoil was not bad at all so my guess is it should be similar with an Encore braked.

I've built several for myself and customers going from 14.5 to 17.5". If it's a factory pistol barrel you want opened up then you'll want pachmayrs and a brake which will make it very, very easy to shoot. This is a pic of an elk I took at 250+yds with a 300WM Encore pistol As far as building them off of rifle barrels I've done that too.

I just did a 30-338 WM in a 16.5" bbl. I also have a 30-280 Ackley Improved in a 15" bbl.
The 30-338 is very similar to the 300WM, but smaller case capacity. My 30-280 AI will push 165 gr bullets at 2734 to 2830 FPS depending on specific load. I haven't had time to chrono the 30-338 as yet, but will very soon. I expect the 30-338 WM to handily beat my 30-280AI in the velocity department.
Recoil on mine quite OK due to length and barrel contour (my bbl is octagon that measures 0.850" across the flats at the muzzle).
I don't have a muzzle brake, and also handle recoil quite well.
Std taper bbls would benefit from a muzzle brake.
If you do a 300 WM, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

On my gun with a 14.5" barrel plus a 2" brake I was pushing 180gr Accubonds just over 2700fps and the brass would pop right out. It's not the most efficient cartridge in a short barrel but it will get things moving.

That's some good velocity with that 14.5" bbl from the 300 WM. I never concern myself with efficiency too much. I look at performance (or at least expected performance) first, with efficiency down the list a bit.
Although, I did pick the 30-338 with the expectation it would match the 300WM ballistically in my 16.5" bbl and do so with less powder.
