Hey guys. I am pretty sure I already asked this once a LOOOOONG time ago, but I can't find it when I search for it.
On a revolver, what do ya use to clean the burn rings off the business end of the stainless steel cylinder?
Thanks!

#9 and a rag. The stain/burn is left for character; it doesn't hurt anything.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

I'll give it a wipe with #9 and call it good. I've never been too worried about them and they prove you actually shoot the gun ;-)
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

if you must have it perfect either flitz or a dremel or bench polisher. The only other thing would be to do as rec and use a good cleaner and a gun cleaning brush or an old tooth brush.

I've used "Mothers Polish", you can buy it at most auto stores and it works great. Use it on stainless guns only though.

In my opinion, you just got to get over the fact that it is there. Just like the drag marks on the cylinder and the little dings that show up from field use. As KRal pointed out, they give it character! JMHO.

I use Bore Tech eliminator and a nylon brush. I subscribe to the notion that I do not want to round the edges of the cylinder throat ends, as doing so would probably not help with accuracy. Not a big fan of attacking with any polish, as polishing does remove metal. Might not be a lot, but do it every time you clean the gun, well......

I know it doesn't necessarily harm anything, but I like mine cleaned. Usually a little hoppes and a brass brush takes it right off, and makes 'em shine again.

I have used the Birchwood Casey lead remover and polishing cloth with great success. I don't use it very often, but when I do, it does work. only use it on stainless though.
that was starting to sound like the Dos Equis commercial haha

Flitz and a rag are all that's necessary.

That's what everyone is claiming. Maybe the deer think that if you don't have the burn on your cylinder they are safe?

Nah Whit, you are good. This is only for those of us who shoot really nice guns like FA's. BFR owner's don't need to worry about it :^)

Yeah, it doesn't bother me to the point that it drives me mad. I just like to have a "polished" look to them when I'm done shooting them for a while. I know for the next month or so, I'm not gonna make it to the range. But I still pick them up at home to admire them, and remember their individual stories. I don't mind dings and whatnot, but if it is something I can remove while cleaning, I'll do it.

Ducking and hiding,
Craig Definitely not nicer than my customs......LOL! You better keep those FAs clean or their tight tolerances will make 'em lock up in the field! Good one, Craig! Nice? Yes, definitely! But not this nice......

Glad you have a sense of humor. Scratch that, glad you like to share pictures of really nice guns that many of us will never have ;^)
But you are correct, my FA can get a little "sluggish" on a long weekend of shooting, depending upon the powder used. And the discoloration on the end of the cylider does not bother me a lot, but that dished out area on the frame, front and below the cylinder drives me absolutely insane........

If this helps at all, I use "Lead-Clean Gun Cloth" made by Pro-Shot Products. Can ONLY use it on stainless steel, though. I used to completely remove those ugly rings off until John Carey at Freedom Arms advised me to leave it alone - just use a good bore cleaner to remove the crud but, he told me to never scrub that area because over time, metal will be polished away and could and will affect barrel / cylinder gap causing diminished accuracy. I clean that area VERY CAREFULLY and lightly then scrub the hell out of the rest of the firearm. IMO if anyone notices that, they either don't use their revolvers and/or their just too dern nosey!! Hope I could help, Buddy!
