I've been working on a Rem XP100 in 221 Fireball lately. I'm tempted to take a scope off a rifle that I haven't used for awile. The scope is a Leupold VariX II 4-12X40mm. Would there be too much recoil for such close eye relief? I never shot this firearm yet so, I don't know what to expect. If the scope is a good idea, would anyone have any photos of shooting positions as I only know about shooting wheelguns. I REALLY appreciate your help and ANY advice that anyone has!!

Ernie would be the one to ask; he uses rifle scopes regularly on his XP's. He always uses muzzle brakes; it would depend on how much your .221 Fireball recoils; which would depend on the weight of the package and whether or not it has a brake.

Safety glasses, brake and 1/2 FOV to start. Then you can start moving in. Its a little scary at first.
All my XPs have rifle scopes.

I have rifle scope on my XP in .223, 14" barrel and no brake. No problem. If your gun is an original 221 with the 10" barrel and plastic stock you may have some muzzle flip. The stock on mine is heavier than a factory stock, which along with the 14" tube helps keep the muzzle down. I would suggest first trying it while keeping your head well back to see how the gun reacts.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

As mentioned, give yourself room for safety.
Once you determine how far it is moving back then you can start getting closer.
Most of my pics or videos will have me closer than I would have you start out with, since I use brakes on my XP's and mine weigh more.

Most of the plastic stocked XP-100's have compartments molded into the forend that are made to accept .38 Special wadcutters (bullets only!). This will give you a little extra weight to help control the muzzle flip. The extra weight is concealed so no one will be tempted to call your XP "fat".
