Hi guys I have a 14" 41 Mag that I can use from my dad. I want to use a 10" though. What kind of differences would I see by using a 10" versus the 14" I am thinking of using the factory federal rounds with the 180 grain Barnes bullet if that helps. It says 1700 FPS but I don't know what barrel length that they base that number on.

I would expect that the factory numbers are loosely based on a revolver barrel, length unknown. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in their claims of velocity as they are often optimistic at best. In a single shot you will see an increase over revolver velocities due to the absence of the cylinder gap and longer tube. Bigger bores do not suffer as badly from barrel length loss as smaller bores, the 41 in a 10 would be a nice combo.

Rod, too.

Thank you. I expected those numbers to be inflated some for sure.

Which exact round are you talking about and where did you get your information? This round seems to match your description, but is rated at 1130fps...

Typically how much velocity is gained from a 10" to a 14" .I know lots of variables but in general sense. I am thinking about 40-50 FPS per inch.

I doubt you'll see that much with a 41, maybe 30 or so. It depends on what propellant they are using as well.

Ok. It is amazing on how the powder makes such a difference. I never knew there were so many variations and combinations out there to play with. Kind of boggles the mind really. As usual thank you for the information.

There are a LOOOOOT of variables here... What I am going to say is that my 15in 357 Max gets 2100 with a 180gr and my 15in 414 SM gets 2100 with a 210gr XTP.

I have loading data for the 41 in my TC loading book. If you are interested send me a PM to remind me to post it this weekend.

I had both a 10" and a 14" the gain was about 200fps+ at times 210 Factory WWsp 1540 in my 10"
1700+ in my 14 " and so on
210 Gold dots ran 1750+
I do not have my notes but there was a large difference at least witth my two barrels

if you want more post and i will look the stuff up
