I have a question I'm hoping you guys can help me out with. I just recently became the proud owner of my first FA, in 475 Linebaugh. Now this is where the question starts. Since I have obtained my 475 Linebaugh, I've been looking at the 500 Linebaugh. My question is, since I have a 475, is it worth the step up to the 500?
The reason I ask is because, I found myself is this same dillema when I purchased a 300 ultra Mag,then purchased a 338 Ultra Mag. The biggest thing I found out after purchasing the 338 was that the little bit I gain from the 338 wasn't enough to worry about. I have never shot a 500 Linebaugh and have little experience with that caliber so I felt this forum would be the best area to pose the question.

Many will argue that the difference is minimal, but I prefer the half-inchers over all else. The .500 Linebaugh is a great round (that won't fit in an FA). I load it with heavy bullets at moderate velocities and it is accurate, and it knocks the snot out of game, big and small -- by the way, "knocking the snot" is a scientific term for poleaxing.
I love the .475 as well, but the .500 just has a lot of appeal. You can load it to low pressures (under 40K psi) and it will go end to end on nearly any animal.

What are you planning to shoot with it? Most critters won't be able to tell the difference.

I'm not planning to shoot anything in particular, just asking the question if it would be just foolishly spent money on a gun thats not moving up that much in format. If I can use Whit's scientific term, does it "knock the snot" out of the game that much more?

Whit kinda hit this already, but I would say it depends on how bad ya WANT it, cause honestly, ya don't NEED it!
If ya WANT it, I say its well worth getting, no matter how big of a step there is between the two. I don't have experience with either one of them, so I'm no use when it comes to practical experience.
Ya only live once, so ya might as well enjoy it instead of wondering what could have been!

Whit, I know that the FA is not capable of holding the 500, but I recently seen a 500 Linebaugh for sale and all of a sudden money started burning a hole in my pocket. " darn internet", Lol..

I only mentioned that in the case that you might have wanted a conversion on an FA. That is specifically why the .500 JRH came to being because of the limited space offered by the FA83. Everyone should have a couple of .50 cals!

I agree, but I'm not a wealthy man. I have $50 every week taken out of my check, and this is my hunting fund. I use this to buy either new toys, or hunts. It actually payed for my Africa trip 5yrs ago, and I never know when an affordable trip is gonna come along that I can swing..

to answer your question directly, there is nothing the 500 can do the 475 can't. I have both and I like shooting the 500 alot and it is impressive to look down the bore of it. This is going to come down to want on your part. If you think about it there is nothing on this continent that can't be handled with a 44 or 45LC stoked up and every animal in Africa including elephant has been taken with the 454 and going way back the 44 although I wouldn't recommend that. The 475 is a compromise between the 500 and 454 you have more velocity than the 500 and a bigger heavier bullet than the 454. Me personally if I could afford it I'd buy it if it's a decent deal. I hardly ever make it through a season carrying just one gun anyways. If I'm not seeing anything I'll switch guns for "luck" or I'll just wake up in the morning and decide if I see something I want to put a bigger hole in it.

Ive always looked at my 500s as being a "limited" 475. Thats why i dont own a 500l anymore. You buy a 500L to have it and want it. It wont revilutionize your huntig it will be a piece that is just like the 475 but much more limited in range i have owned and ill own another but i just never really used it much. The 475 is as rod said a gun that has the best ofthe 454 and the 500. I use the 454 the most the 475 next and just didnt use the 500 most. Theres those thatll tell ya the exact opposite though. Ive found i like smaller guns like the 41 and a 357 mag fa much more useful with a big bore waiting in the wings. Theres nothing wrong with getting the 500 but id get one if i had "extra" money.

There is no reason under the sun for getting one and letting it collect dust. Take it out, master it, and take all manner of game from deer, hogs, bear, whatever. It won't be any less effective then a lesser caliber.

For me it would be a one or the other type of thing. I really don't have the disposable income to afford both and load and shoot them. If I were only to have one big bore over 45 cal it would be a 500JRH, which kinda splits the difference ;-)
Rod, too.

It won't be any less effective then a lesser caliber. That's what I'm thinking. It's gonna take a little longer then my SRH in 454 Casull, I can only shoot about 10-15 rounds before I start getting recoil tremmer's. I'm also refusing to place a scope on my FA. I think it looks better without one, and also makes it easier to carry in a hip holster. I do have a 2x leupold on my SRH and love the gun like that

Nothing wrong with having both
Some days you just want to shoot a different one. I LOVE the 475 but the 500 is an impressive round. It is a bigger difference than you think when you sit them beside each other
And as Whit and others said, need has nothing to do with it, I have a feeling that we all passed up "need" a long time ago....

I'm a huge fan of the 475, not so much the 500's. They punish the shooter exponentially more for little observed difference. The only advantage is a better selection of bullets in the 500 but realistically 1 or two bullet selections in those guns is usually sufficient.

I don't have the revolver, do have 2 encore bull barrels in 475 and 500 Linebaugh. There aint alot of difference between them I just wanted both calibers, I like large calibers especially 50 caliber. Mine knocked the hell out of 350 pound hog. If you want it than get it, you only live once.

Rod, not if thats what i shoot most, but i realize youre right. I do need more of some others so let me know when youre up and running again and i got some business for ya!
I got guns set up for light loads with a scope perfect for deer, i got one for big hardcasts for really big stuff. I got short barrels for belt guns for hiking back up. Some set up for long distance big stuff for oryx. Then theres one or two for giant stuff in africa. So its not as many as ya think.

you know you just gave us all two more good reasons to buy guns. First off: Honey I need a new gun for this new bullet I got. Next is: Honey I don't think I have enough guns for the grand and great grandkids so I need to get some more. LOL Yeah you need to balance that collection out a little more with some more big stuff.

LOL! And one round at a time..... Seriously, though, what bullets, velocity, etc.? I base my opinion on recoil on "traditional" loads. For example, a .475 Linebaugh is/was typically loaded with a 400 or 420 grain bullet between 1,300 and 1,400 fps. A lot of folks have been loading them down to the 1,200 fps range with the same bullets, which puts them in .480 Ruger territory, and takes a considerable sting out of the recoil. Just curious, and sorry for the thread hijack!

Thx whit and rod.
On my 475 and on my sons 500 jrh they are generally loaded differently. I load the 475 to about 1350's or so and on the jrh we like it in the 1200's with the 440s. It seems to get to an obnoxious recoil level a bit quicker. Not sure why. His rational is that he has his scoped 454 if he wants flat high velocity rounds and has his jrh for large chunks of lead at a more sedate velocity. Then theres the 44 i dont think hes shot in awhile

I'm running both cartridges at 1350 or so with a 400gr XTP in the 475 and a 435gr CP in the 500. I have other loads I play with too with the fastest being a 355gr Trueshot running 1550 out of my 475. My 475's snap more than the 500's. I guess it also depends on which 500, my 3-4" 500's get pretty serious but I"m comparing my 6" guns.
I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

Trademark congrats on number 8!
I know I am new to this game but I the one defining factor of how I perceive recoil is how the grip fits my hand. It something that has been said over and over but customs grips makes a huge difference
