Am considering a reasonably priced red dot for hunting and range use for my BFR 475/480 revolver. I would prefer to not spend the money for an Aimpoint. Are they that much better than the other brands? Suggestions on a good choice...

They may be in some way, but I'm not sure where. You will find a lot of shooters here touting the UltraDot and for good reason. I have an UltraDot 25 that took a serious hit to the occular, so much so it warped the tube, but it still works. I also have an old Tasco that has been on everything from a 22LR to a 45/70, but they don't make 'em like that anymore.

Rod, too.

Is the 4 MOA dot size an issue at 100 yds? Ultradot is making a unit called the match dot that is about $50 more expensive and has adjustable dot sizes. Any opinions?

I know very little about red dots. I don't think a reflex type is needed, but again I have zero experience with any of these.

My other choice would simply to go with a 2x Leupold since I have one on my Ruger SRH.

Ultradot, Ultradot, Ultradot.......

You can get a number of different models with different sized dots. I have an Ultradot 6 that has six different options. They are tougher than nails. I have dropped them out of tree stands, subjected them to thousands of .475 Linebaugh, .500 Linebaugh, .500 JRH rounds and they just keep going. They are relatively inexpensive (compared to some of the so-called higher end brands) and they have a lifetime warranty.

I have never had issue with the 4moa dot even out past 100 yards. Just have to practice and get used to it.

How about tube diameter?

I appreciate your responses. I think 4MOA (4") coverage at 100 yds is about as accurate as most people can hope to place a careful revolver shot. But I am just trying to weigh the choices.

I prefer the 30mm tube to the 25 mm (1-inch). Just a preference.

I would go with the 30mm as well but once you start sighting as you should, with both eyes open, the tube size becomes rather moot. If you close your off-eye you will appreciate the extra FOV of the 30mm, and it doesn't hurt to have it even if you sight with both eyes open.

I have a MatchDot on my 44 and can say without question that I would have no problem changing to a standard 30mm UltraDot 4.

I bought the matchdot for the variable dot size but have come to the realization that mine stays on the 4 moa setting pretty much all of the time. I actually find I get better groups with the 4 moa dot than the 2....go figure.

Whit - how are you coming along testing that DeltaPoint and how does it compare to that Ultradot??? I can't see that DeltaPoint coming up short in any manner except maybe price.

I don't have a Deltapoint. I have an Ultradot LT. Was I supposed to test one? Remind me! Thanks!

Really no need - I and others have shot the snot out of the DeltaPoint and they will hold up to recoil on anything one can stand to shoot and then some.

I haven't tried dropping one out of a tree or banging it against a rock ledge or anything like that but my granddaughter has given it a little rough handling while calling coyotes in 10*F weather with no problems noted except a lost rubber hood protector. I've got a couple spares now, so I'm good for at least a couple more rough outings.

WOW I am out of it.

I was thinking that you were going to try to use Red Dot powder in the 480... ... ... ...

I do have a load using Blue Dot... LOL

Ordered a 30mm Ultradot today with the 4moa dot. I appreciate the input and looking forward to trying one of these out.

I like it a lot so far! However, the jury is still out. Needs to be abused some more -- actually, a whole lot more!
