I have decided I am going to chase one of my dream hunts. I want to go mountain lion hunting. I am looking not only for a kill, but the total experience of the dogs, the chase, the atvs or snowmobiles, and the backcountry adventure.
I know I need to to be in great physical shape for this hunt. The anticipation of the hunt would be a great motivation to stay focused on working out.
Does anyone have any outfitter recomendations? Does anyone have any stories to tell?

I have been looking at Byron Stewart out of Alberta. tntoutfitting.com The bad thing is you cant hunt with a handgun. The good news he has the best success and some of the biggest cats Ive seen. From my understanding he is booked up til 2016 and be prepared to drop 10k for his hunts.

Smokey Canyon Outfitters of WY/ID. Excellant record, huge lions, and you can use handguns!

Hearing all this talk about a cat hunt, has me thinking about an Outfitter I met at the Harrisburg Sportsman Show a few years back. The Outfitter was out of West Texas, and guaranteed 100% opportunity. The way he guaranteed this was, he would stake goats out on back roads every few miles. When they found a goat that had been hit, he would release the dogs. He said that a cat with a full stomach wouldn't travel far, and it wouldn't take long to tree the cat. One twisted puppy,Lol...

Smokey canyon outfitters . Did a mulie hunt with them. The experience is everything you could ask for. Ask to hunt with Lavoy , he has 100 % success. Hunts are in Wyoming and Idaho . Food is great. Very reasonable prices.

Been getting ready for a lion hunt myself!!! I'm on the list, just waiting for a phone call!!! I'm so dang excited I can hardly sleep some nights! Running out of time though as the season is almost over. If I don't receive a phone call, I don't owe anything, so that's good.

I'd love to take a mountain lion with a handgun but I am afraid to say I am woefully too heavy and out of shape. I'd end up getting Life Flighted out at maybe 2/3rds of the way through.

Wade Lemon out of Utah offers a good hunt, and gets some big cats.

I would love to do a mountain lion hunt. I think it is one of those hunts that is perfect for a handgun.

Ditto that. And at 65, too old.

I suspect the only way I would be able to hunt mountain lion is if I lived in a state with a large population and obtained some sound cards for my Fox Pro E caller. Set up in a good location and try my luck.

I selected Smokey Canyon Outfitters. The recomendations here weighed heavily in my decision. Plus the outfitter is handgun friendly. I chose to do a mid January, full on snowmobile and snowshoe, possibly 30 below zero, wintertime hunt. I will likely use a revolver as this is one of those hunts where a sixgun on the hip seems like the perfect choice.

Most hunters come into money late in life. Walk every chance you get and take the stairs. My guide told me not to worry, he would quarter me and pack me out :-).

My mtn. lion hunt is set for mid January. I am double excited because in addition to my lion I have a wyoming cow elk tag. We will be hunting the lions in the elks winter range so I should have a good chance at an elk. I intend to use my Contender 35rem with 200 grain Leverevolutions for the elk.
I know we all like to compare and contrast calibers and bullets, but truthfully I think most anything would work on a treed cat. I think portabillity and the abillity to place a shot accurately would be more important than power. The addition of an elk tag changes things. I am carrying my Super Blackhawk 44 for the mtn. lion. I think any hollow point would work for the cat, but I will have 250 grain Partitions in case I need the revolver for the cow elk.

I know I came into this a little late, but anyone wanting to hunt Mountain Lion horseback should contact Chris Todd of AZ lion hunts. I had a fantastic experience with Chris. You can read about it here: http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads..._he#Post6046662

Good luck on your hunt. they are truly a LOT of fun.

your most welcome. I am a big time rider so being horseback was my #1 priority. The bobcat was a nice bonus. Although I would have liked to at least get on a lion run, the hunt was still a huge success in my book.

For all you older out of shape guys, I know how it is.
Being disabled at a young 58 years old I can't walk all tha well or more then 100 yards at a time without sitting down and resting for awhile.
But there is hope! I was calling in coyotes a few years ago and I'll be darn if a Mt. Lion didn't sneak in. But I didn't see him until he was on his way out.
I had a tag in my pocket but I was so shocked at seeing the lion flash by a small opening in the sagebrush that I didn't even think of taking a shot. LOL I wasn't prepared for a lion to come in where I was hunting. I was within 50 or so yards of my Jeep(it was hidden behind some tall sagebrush.)
My point is you can still hunt for Mt.Lions.by calling them in and not having to do a Life Flight hunt to get one. They are very sneaky critters so keep your eyes open and call for at least an hour in each set up. Good luck and good hunting!
