I understand heavier bullets shoot higher normally, due to lower velocity, thus increasing "dwell time" in the barrel, and exiting at a higher point during recoil. Specifically concerning 44mag, my question is this: If a 240gr bullet at 1300fps leaves the barrel at "X" position of barrel during recoil rise, wouldn't a 300gr bullet, at 1300fps leave the barrel at "X" as well, as opposed to "X+/-" ? Given the same velocity, wouldn't they both leave the barrel at the same point of rise in recoil? Therefore, out to a certain distance, would be close enough in p.o.i.? I know the heavier bullet will fall to the earth at a closer distance, but what range would the difference really come into play ?

The heavier slug takes more "oomph" to get going at the same velocity than the lighter one, which increases the initial recoil impulse resulting in a higher muzzle at exit.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

SRH shooting a 300gr XTP on the second crimp line at 1400fps and 2.5 in low at 100 yards. Now, the 240 K bullet at 1400fps was shooting within .5 in of the other load at 100...

9.5in barrel, scoped, off sand bags...

There are several variables including your own grip, as recoil increases we have a tendency to grip the gun tighter to avoid embedding our front sights in our foreheads. Like the other Rod said the heavier bullet may be running the same velocity across the chrono but acceleration varies between the two with the heavier bullet accelerating slower. The results you get shooting would change if you went to a mechanical rest but the human component will throw a wrench in the works everytime.

I wasn't trying to say much, just share my limited experience. What I did notice is this. I am shooting a long heavy gun with scope with a firm grip off a sand bag. I wonder how much difference there would be with my 4 5/8ths 44 with the same two loads...

Barrel length has a significant effect, my 9-1/2" 480 Ruger is more consistant than my 6" 45 Colt even though it is packing a bigger punch. Grip is equally critical.

TCTEX.
You know the only way to answer that is to get out there and sling some lead then post the results here. Any other answer would be a wild a-- guess.Gives you a good reason to get out and shoot a few, like you need one! :)If both guns are scoped it may not change much but if open sighted the longer sight radius will have a big impact on shoot-ability,bullet impact. The scopes add weight helping keep the muzzle down. Shorter lighter guns for me are harder to be consistent with.

Problem is I have his guns

and have had for a few months but they are just about done now. I get to have a hernia fixed weds but it's outpatient so I figure I'll be tinkering again by Friday.

Hey Rod are you the Million Dollar Man yet? I am pretty close to being the Bionic Man.

LOL, I'm getting there, this is surgery 18 for me but at least these aren't too bad. It's the 3rd hernia I've had and second surgery for them, last time I got the two for one deal.

At least tease him a little bit with pictures and something like these will be back [one of these days].Look on the bright side TCTEX, at all the money Rod is saving you in powder and lead you would be wasting.
