Looking for some loads for a 45/70. I just got the barrel for my Contender. Its the super 16" barrel. At this time I'll just be shooting (hopefully) deer with it. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have been using my 45-70 contender for years. I have found any 300 grain factory hollow point works fine. I don't recommend the Remington hp because they blow up on impact because they are soft. The 45-70 is a real deer hammer. I like it so much I have two barrels. One with scope and one without. Good luck you won't be disappointed with it. You will get a few strange looks at the range when you turn that cannon loose.
I just started reloading my 45-70 in the last few months. One word of caution. The hornady brass used for the leverevolution rounds are short and I could not get a crimp on them. I loaded some barnes TSX 250 grain bullets and wow what a mushroom. I will post a before and after picture later.

Hey man, this would be the perfect barrel to use next fall/winter on an upcoming "big bore" hunt I'm trying to put together. It will really be a great boar hammer!

Thanks DeerDad. Im looking forward to trying it out. I have a 444 Marlin in the contender and a 358 JDJ. This barrel should be "interesting" to say the least to shoot.

Wiseguy. I tried to post a picture to this topic but cannot. I posted the pictures of the 45-70 Barnes bullet on the bragging board. I was using 48 grains of H4198 ignited by CCI 200 Primers. Not sure if you are new to reloading or contenders but if you have any misfires don't assume its your reloads. Change the hammer spring in your TC frame. I learned this the hard way.
I ordered the springs from Bellm's because it was recommended by the more senior guys on this site. Good advice once again. I noticed a significant change when I pulled the hammer back with the new spring installed. No more misfires.
