What can you guys tell me about the 17 Remington? Aside from the generic info I can get googling it? I will be getting gramps model 700 this week and was just curious what you guys like to use/experiences/best bullets etc. Thanks a bunch...

for some reason I seem to be getting more long guns these days after not having any for a while..got gramps model 94 in 44 mag recently and that has to be one of the funnest guns I have ever shot and used.

Been around for a while, as you know. Initially, complaints came from all corners due to bore fowling, lack of bullets, inappropriate powders, "it doesn't shoot like me 50 BMG, etc., etc.. Back then the bullet choices were factory and Hornady. Bullet and bore cleaning tech have come a looooong way. Hornady, Sierra, Berger, and a bunch of small shops ( Calhoon ) make bullets. Brass has always been modestly available, but easy to make on your own ( 223 Rem ). CFE223 powder should be just the ticket to reduce fouling; and, Barnes CR-10, Sweets 7.62 bore solvents work great. I now shoot 17 Mach 4 in my MGM barrel with Hornady or Sierra bullets and CFE223 and couldn't be happier.

PS: I would avoid anything larger than small critters. Some folks thought they had an excellent antelope, deer, and elk gun - NOT!

ya I assumed it was just a small critter/varmint gun. I guess flat shooting always equals "good for elk"..lol
thanks for the info

I've had one for a few years now and love it. It is a small critter gun but I have shot many coyotes with it. Out to about 150 yards it will often drop them in their tracks. Past that they run a little ways before piling up.(just like deer usually do). Amazing what a 25 grain bullet will do.

Got a picture of those sierra .17's? Never heard of them making any .17 caliber bullets and I shoot a lot of .17's. Don't overlook the hornady bullets. They are about the only game in town now. Berger discontinued all of their .172 bullets except the 25gr varmint bullet. It has a HUGE meplat and the bc really suffers. Most of the small custom shops used J4 jackets for their bullets. When berger discontinued the bullets they discontinued the jackets too. That means most of those shops are no longer making bullets. IMR4320 is supposed to be a good powder for the 17 remington. I'd look for factory cases, because if you make them from 223 the necks will be really short and you'll really be jumping the bullets to the lands.

Aaron,

I believe that Midway "Dog Town" bullets are made specially for Midway by Sierra. The bullets have the same profile, etc. as the Sierra varmint bullets in 22, +.
