Hey guys thought you might like this. An older friend of mine bought himself a 460 XVR for this upcoming deer season. Well up came some unforeseen family issues and he found no time to even sight the monster in. So being such a good friend I agreed when he asked if I would sight it in and test it out for him. I have been itching to try it out and I finally got my chance. He equipped it with a 2.5-8x leupold mark III scope. Now never have shot a scoped pistol I was anxious to see how it did, as I have been thinking about scoping the FA for some time now.
I sighted the 460 in at 100 yards with 200 grain factory hornady loads. I was immediately impressed with the accuracy of this beast. It easily shot 1 inch groups or smaller at 100 yards and because of its weight the recoil was very enjoyable compared to my FA 454. I even shot some corbon 395 grain hard casts at 1525 fps and found the recoil very manageable.
I wanted to try it out on a groundhog so I went looking for one. It wasn't long until I spotted one sitting on a log 45 yards away. As I set up for the shot it ducted off the log into its hole. I walked up closer and stood looking around. As I was about to leave I saw the groundhog stand up out of its hole. I could see it was a young one and I debated letting it go. But I figured it was a pest and I really wanted to see how the 460 would perform. I turned the scope down to 2.5x power and took the 15 yard offhand shot. As the blast of the gun went off the groundhog disappeared. I wondered if I had missed. I walked up to see a blood splotch where the hog had been standing. I looked around and saw the groundhog bent in half stuck in its hole. The impact force of the bullet had blown it sideways into the hole. I pulled it out and stood there in awe. I was expecting some carnage but nothing like what happened. I have never seen any pistol damage like the 460 is capable of. I aimed right behind the shoulder and the bullet impact was true and blew the groundhog in half. Only skin held it together. All I can say is WOW.
As far as the scope I am still debating for the FA. I could definitely shoot better with a scope, but I would lose the portability and quick shooting the open sights allow. I will have to keep trying this 460 out before I decide whether to leave the 454 naked or scoped. Anyway boys enjoy this carnage !! SS

Very Nice!! you are right about the accuracy of those guns. I had the base XVR with the same scope and I was running 260gr Partitions at 2000fps and shooting MOA out to 150 off the bags with no problem. I kind of wish I hadn't sold it but I just prefer a more portable size in revolvers, and besides I sold it to Tigger before he got sick but unfortunately I don't think he ever even had a chance to shoot it.

Rod, I think SS needed to use hardcast for such a dangerous game animal...

Well if they are that dangerous, do we need to consider deleted uranium?

I think you mean depleted uranium and that may be a good idea!

Excellent shooting ss. The 460 I tested with whit may have been the most accurate production handgun I have ever shot, but it was definately the loudest. Congrats anything bigger should be no problem.

I've got an 8 3/8" 460 but unfortunately it has sat neglected in the safe. Hope mine shoots as good as yours, good shooting!

Not much eating left after your shot. What would you use the remains for, fertilizer?

Looks like you just barely got him. It's a good thing, if not and he got ahold of you he would have chewed your leg off. Great looking set up there.
