I am planning on purchasing a Encore pistol frame this weekend and am wondering what barrel I should get 1st. Uses would be punching hole in paper and hunting. Also it needs to be larger the .24 caliber.

Do you hand-load?
What distance do you anticipate shooting game at?
How large of game animal?
And, welcome to HH!
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

And, welcome to HH! 1. Not yet 2. From 50 yards to 350ish yards 3. White Tail and hogs, most likely mostly hogs What ya planning to hunt with her? See #3 above. I was thinking 7mm-08 or 308.

I was thinking 7mm-08 or 308. Either would be a fine choice. At least 15" of barrel to get the good out of them.

Are Pachmayr Decelerators a good investment for the encore?

A muzzle brake might be a better investment. The 308 can be a handful without one. Even the 7-08 with heavy bullets will get your attention. I've never used Pachy's so not much help there. Anything that makes shooting more comfortable will make you a better shooter.

I love my 308. Had SSK put their muzzle break on it and it shoots like a 45acp.

yes those grips help. im a fan of the 7mm-08 as well. shoots very well and recoil is manageable without a brake. my 15" shoots the 120's great. haven't shot anything over 140gr but for our deer the 120's cant be beat. killed to 300 with it.

I'll second the 7mm08. The perfect balance of recoil and power. I don't like a break on my hunting guns because of the extra noise, and the 7 08 is managable even with 140s. These fell to the 7 08 and a 140grn speer soft point boattail over H-380... 2012 136yrds 2011 110yrds 2010 300yrds Can't go wrong with the 7mm08!!

The 7mm-08 and the 308 are great choices, another choice would be a 260. You are on the right track.

I would choose the 308 as my first barrel. He doesn't reload yet. You can pick up 308 ammo anywhere usually. The factory ammo options range from basic to premium as well. There is some reduced recoil ammo out there for the 308. There is also Zombie ammo. We all need some of that. LOL

Don't rule out the 30-06. I love mine. Ammo availible anywhere if you don't handload and handloaded it is capible of super accuracy. reflex264 Doe at 200 yards with the 30-06

I went with the 308 first, it is a handful. Now I have a 7mm-08, I load 100 gr for Varmint and plinking 120gr BT for deer, and 140 for hogs

Nothing says you gotta stay with the same barrel. That is the beauty of the system.

If it is still available when I get paid that is why I am going to buy it. Mainly for the frame and scope.

That 270 really needs the 15" barrel. Lot's of blast with a short barrel, plus it'll suffer ballistically in that short tube.

That is what I was thinking too but the deal is too good to pass up. here is what the muzzle break looks like on it I cant tell if that is threaded on or if it is part of the barrel.

That muzzle brake steals from the length of the barrel, so you essentially have about a 10" tube. Not very practical for 270 Win.

who makes 480 ruger barrels with iron sights? T/C custom shop is the only one I am finding. MGM has the option for a scope base but not irons.

The holes for the 4-hole scope base also fit the T/C rear sights. You could have any of various front sights D&T'd. I have had a hankering for a Contender with a Williams ghost ring rear and a Marble's fiber optic front in green.

Check out Mike Bellm's site. And when I mean check it out I mean read all of the informative stuff on how to make them work for you. If you still have any questions, and you will, email him and he'll get right back to you. He also sells some custom chambered Bergara barrels. He's very easy to work with and just like Rod, very willing to share his knowledge on the subject. http://www.bellmtcs.com/store/index.php?cid=562
