I am new to handgun hunting; weapon of choice is a Ruger SBH and will be hunting Whitetail in East/Central TX. Body weight probably under 150 lbs. What recommendations are there for factory ammunition in the 240 to 250 bullet weight range? What recommendations are there for 240-250 grain bullets for hand loading?

I have found that the Remington 240 SJHP shoots very well out of the SBH's. It has been around forever and I believe it's the bullet that the 44 was introduced with in '55. I've killed cow elk with that bullet and it's certainly capable for whitetail. For handloading I like the 270 gr. Speer Deep Curl (Gold Dot). It's a SP but very accurate. Barnes also makes a 225 XPB that would no doubt be awesome too.

Gary is spot on. The Remington bullet is excellent and I found it surprisingly accurate! The only other one I'd mention is the XTP 240. It's an excellent performer on whitetail in my experiences from handguns to muzzleloaders. Good luck!

That old Remington factory load is still a great way to go on deer. Handloaded I like the 240XTP. The 255gr Cast Performance bullet also rocks. Magnus bullets Keith bullet is very good. reflex264

The 240 XTPs shot the best in several guns. This bullet did a fine job for me last year when I killed my whitetail.

My vote is for the Speer Gold Dot(deep curl) bullets. I used them to take a 160lb doe with just one shot two seasons ago. It was only about 20ft, but the bullet seemed to do everything I asked of it. You really can't go wrong with an XTP, but my hands on success has been with the Gold Dots.

I still have a coffee can full of Remington 240gr. JHP bullets. Their expansion rate is tremendous and can take a whitetail in short order when put in the right place. The 240gr XTP in factory ammo has been used on hogs from a Dan Wesson with 8" barrel and never failed. Good luck and good huntin....

Winchester's 210 Silvertip is a good one also. +1 As to reloading for deer, practice is first so I chose cheap bulk 210 grain Remington 210 grain JHPs.
