I managed to get my hands on a Rossi R92 in 454 Casull a couple months back and have been playing with loads for it. Last week one of the local gun shops was selling the 275 XPB Barnes bullets meant for the 460 S&W real cheap so I grabbed a couple of boxes. I know that with my Ruger SRH the overall length of the cartridge would not work with the overall length of the cylinder, but with the longer chamber in the Rossi I figured they might work.

Any one out there ever try something like this, or have any advise. I checked the nose of the bullet and it will not have any impact on the primer of another cartridge when loaded into the tube, so that's one potential problem avoided...

And if all else fails I can run them through my muzzle loader with sabots.

I have a 20 inch .460 barrel for my Encore rifle. I have used .454 Casull loads with the 240 grain XTP-MAG bullet on a maximum charge of H110 and it works well. The bullets have all exited and appear to have been expanding without fragmenting. The load that I prefer is the 250 grain T/C Super Glide sabot muzzleloader bullet over a maximum charge of H110. It just looks neater. It always expands and exits on shoulder shots with extensive internal damage. Loading the polymer tip bullet is tricky. P.M. me and I will tell you how I load them. It is a little unorthodox.

Will it cycle the longer cartridge from the magazine to the chamber? If so, I don't forsee any other problems.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I once owned the 480R version of your rifle. It would only feed the standard 325gr XTP bullets and only with the gun held parallel to the ground. 400gr cast and 275gr Barnes would not feed whatsoever. Good luck.

I know you are asking about pointy bullets, but my Puma (454) has feed all of the bullets I have tried so far, that work in my FA. Up to 360 WFN's. As was noted above, it will probably not be a chamber issue, but from the tube, onto the lifter, then up and in. I would just make up a dummy round or two and check them out.

The chamber on mine is a little rough, and on the very small side. I can take fired brass from my Puma, and drop them into my FA fun. The roughness of the chamber makes it so that really warm loads (still safe by the book) have to cool for a second or two before I can cycle the action quickly. But mine nows wears a crescent metal butt plate, so the rifle does not get a lot of rock'em sock'em loads ;^)
