Has anyone used any Magtech 44 magnum ammo on deer sized game? I picked up several boxes and may try them on a hog or deer this season. My cronograph is at a friends house, but the loads seem very mild. They have soft recoil in my 629 and Ruger 77/44.

I have tried it but it didn't shoot well at all in my guns.

Never chrono'd any, but it shoots pretty well in my SBHH. I like the ammo. It's actually one of the more accurate 240gr loads that my particular gun likes.

It should be just fine,

I will caution you with the velocities you are getting out of the rifle barrel you may find the construction of the bullet not up to snuff, so to speak. I have had some 240's turn to shrapnel after hitting shoulders due the thin jackets and the velocities the rifle will push them.

Set some wet pack up at 50 yards and see what they do out of the rifle, this would be my recommendation

Thanks for all the replies. I agree with needing to test them first before hunting, especially in the rifle. I've been using handloaded 265 grain Hornady's the last few years. They penetrate well on deer. Has anyone used the 240 gr xtp's on deer sized game? I hear they do a fine job too.

I shot that ammo a lot before I started reloading. I always thought it was great ammo for the price. It averaged about 1250 fps in my revolver. I did use it to hunt one time. I shot a doe broadside at 40 yards and the bullet zipped through the lungs with no sign of expansion and minimal blood trail - took a while to find her. Based on that very limited data I would shoot for the shoulder with a revolver or shoot it from a rifle. All my other deer taken with 44 magnum were with 240 XTPs going about the same speed. XTPs work nicely at that speed.

Yea I've had the same problem with using cast bullets on deer. They just don't offer enough resistance for the bullet. A 44 cal hole through the lungs takes awhile to slow them down. A maxi ball from a muzzleloader does the same thing. I've heard the 300 grain xtp's had similar results as well.

Did you catch the on side shoulder? Looks like the bullet opened up fine! I'm guessing you clipped an artery too. I may just have to try one on one of my "yard deer"

I forget exactly how the shot hit. I know I hit one shoulder but forget which one. Basically she went down in the front and wheel barrowed through hedge row. I like shooting them as affordable and shoot well and clean

Yes they are very clean! I've never seen any that shoot that clean. I wonder what kind a powder they're using.
