I have been shooting factory loads in my 7.5" FA .454 Casull and love the gun. Now I'm trying my hand at reloading for it. I've tried a 260 gr FA bullet over 33 gr W296 in starline brass and CCI small rifle mag primers. The other load is a 240 Hornady XTP Mag over 29 gr 4227. My question is; is there a better powder for the Casull? The winchester load seems to burn dirty and the 4227 load seems to have quite a bit of unburned powder left? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. There is a big buck in northern Maine waiting for me and I'd like to take him with a home recipe. Thanks.

AA#9 or Hodgdon Lil Gun would be a couple to try.

You might want to try No.9 with a 300gr.

I run nothing but H110 in all my big bores and I've had excellent luck with it.

If you aren't concerned about maximum velocity you could try HS-6. Otherwise H110 is my preference for full tilt loadings.

H110 and W296 top choices for full-house loads. I would try the 325 gr. Swift bullets or the Barnes 250 gr. XPB but everyone has their favorite loads. I shoot mostly Noslers but they were discontinued a few years ago.

A clean and accurate powder for the .454 is BlueDot. It won't get top velocities but is a recommended powder by FA. They list 1704 fps with a 260 grain bullet, I haven't chronographed it but it's plenty for any deer. Recoil is also noticeably lower than H110 etc.

Based on total trigger pull weight, my trigger finger has lifted well over 200 tons....

I use h110 and hs6 or longshot for nonfulltilt loads. I gotta be partial to the h110 or win296 which is now the exact same thing since i used it in africa. A very very pleasant load is hs6 and those 260s. Itll blow through any deer ya wanna shoot at

Right now I'm a H110 fan for my loads. I've used the IMR4227 and you really need to compress the powder to reduce the unburned portion, that's why I switched to H110. As for bullets my favorite right now is the Speer Gold Dot Deep Curl 300gr over 29gr of H110. Past couple of years it's put meat in the freezer.

H110/296 seems to work best for me.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think I'll stay with W296 but give bluedot a try as well. It's nice to know there is a wealth of resource on this site.

AA #9 have sent bullets down the barrel of my 454. Some are slow, some are medium. Remington 7 1/2 primers have always ignited the powder. Through the years of handloading for my 454 I have found that a powder that's accurate with, lets say a 260gr jacketed bullet will not shoot as good with a 300gr jacketed bullet. Its for this reason that my plastic bullet box's are filled with handloads using one brand of powder for one bullet weight and another brand of powder with another bullet weight. Let me add that when making a full power hunting load any of the slow burning powders are good to use in your search for an accurate handload. Its finding that powder and sticking with it. I see that your 454 is made by Freedom Arms which will make your search a little easier because of the built-in accuracy of that handgun....Good luck

I've always used the 260 FA with 296/110 and a rem 7.5. Your load mentioned seems to be in the low end if my memory is working. I'll have to check but moving it up a little if that's the case could help some but I've never found a load ever that wasn't accurate in my FA to be honest. From mild to wild, it's a tackdriver. BUT, if you're gonna go lower end, you need to switch to 231 or something else. 110/296 should not go too low for obvious reasons. I truly think stepping up your charge weight will help your issues with the 296/110 loads.

Go to Freedom arms website and they should still have the load data for their bullets there. It's under a tab or link for 454 casual load data I think.

I use 2400 with 300 gr XTPs in mine.

that's all I use in my Casull is W296 or H110,...I always thought they were pretty clean burning to me but the only other powder I was comparing them to was 2400,...the 2400 was in my other magnum guns not my Casull ,I use the W296 and H110 for all my Magnum pistols

33.9 grs of W296 or H110 under a Hornady 250 X.T.P. ,...it is on the lower end of speed 1520 f.p.s. but with either powder these are very accurate loads and are all the power I need for whitetail,...I am using a C.C.I. 400 primer-standard small rifle primer instead of the mag primer,...this was one of Dick Metcalfs recipes when I first started handloading for the Casull

I agree with you James, each gun shoot it's own medicine the best. You really have to find what works best for.
I enjoy that part of reloading the best. Finding what works best in each gun. I learned this very early in my reloading career, when reloading a lot of different rifles.. Not all guns shoot the same bullet, powder, primer, or even brass the same..

While I don't have a 454, I've had great luck with H110 out of my 460.

I like A2400 myself. I load 26.0 grains of 2400 over a Hornady 250 gr. XTP. In my Magnum Research 454 it will shoot 1" groups at 50 yds. all day long if I do my part.
