Hi guys,
It has been awhile since I visited your site, but you alway make me feel like I'm not crazy when I do. I hate optics, and I hate banging up my shoulder, so I love iron sited handguns. It is just my 'happy place'. Like Steve Lee says 'I don't care if they are big or small, if they are for sale, I want 'em all'. I bagged my first deer with a rifle (Winn '94 in .44mag) after I missed my first deer I shot at with a s/w .44mag. (Missed it 5 times!) I've since redeemed myself, and have put all my venison in the freezer with handguns, save for one with a hammer, but that was a wierd story.
Someone gave me a muzzle loader a few years back. It was an entry level cva with a plastic stock. I'm no fan of long gun, and hate plastic for the most part. It was a nice move on his part, but I was not swept off my feet.
Well, the Uberti Colt Walker swept me. It is such a nice tool. Like other Uberties it is really well made and just a blast to shoot. I did a write up on it over at the Keltec owners site:
http://www.thektog.org/forum/f100/new-toy-cap-n-ball-colt-walker-257600/
I did a few searches here on colt/walker, on Cap and ball, and on black powder. I got nuthin, but that might just be me.
This gun was speced out to be stout enough to take down a horse that an injun was riding. No, it isn't pc, but it was spec'ed for that. For 88 years it was the strongest handgun in the world. Not to be unseated until the .357 came along. And, I swear to god I didn't realize it until after the purchase AGAIN, it is a classic 'Clint Eastwood' gun.
I live in Georgia, and have no intrest in bow hunting. Deer season has opend up for bow now, but primitive weapons will open before 'modern' firearms next month. So I hope to put some Venison in the freezer with this pup this year. I'm not a natural at shooting, but I do have the control to not take dumb shots. I've not bagged a lot of deer, but I've never wounded one and not put it in the freezer. So I'll be keeping my shots to 50 yards and hunting in the woods, not along crop fields.
I'm just wondering if any of you fine gents ever play with black powder?

Take care,
be safe,
and happy hunting

Oh, btw, Me and a bunch of others will be shooting it up in S.W. Kentucky the first weekend in October. If anyone wants to join, you are more than welcome, and I promise a good time with good folks. Follow my sig in the above thread. ;-)

If I remember specs correctly, the Walker was the first conical shooting projectile firearm. Walker wanted a 45 projectile that shot a ball that weighted the amount of a 54 cal round ball. Well, the rest is history.

I will see what else I can dig up. Give me a couple of days and I might be able to give you more.

Ps, the reloading data I have from Lyman gives data for the 1858 shooting a round ball at/around 1000 fps. I also think that data is light.

I live in Georgia, and I'm not sure it's legal to hunt primitive weapons season with cap and ball revolvers. I believe it has to be a muzzleloading firearm.

Yeah, the data is pretty straight forward. Don't put more than 60 grians in it, and 60 fills up the cylinder before you compress it. So I thank you, but I wasn't really looking for load data, just wondering if others of you played with this coner of the gun world?

D.B.

BTW, I've only found round ball for it. Horandy .454 shot at $12 per 100. I bought some Missouri bullet '.451" ' shot that was .447" and didn't work at all. They are refunding me my order there. But the .454 ball works fine. The sites on this gun are tiny. Tiny and deer colored. The gun also shoots pretty high, but at full charge is workable. Come on, in 165 years, I'd expect some improvements.

I have a 45LC conversion cylinder for one listed in the Classifieds. I had a guy that really wanted one and kept bugging me so I finally sold him mine but he didn't have enough for the conversion cylinder too so he was supposed to let me know when he had the money for it. I never heard from him again so now I have the cylinder and I believe I may have a holster specifically for the Walker too. Send me a PM if your interested in any of it.

Rod, that would rock!!

DB, your spot on. I was just trying to say the 1858 Rem data was light for the Walker.

Hey Rod, thanks for the offer. I've got stuff I can carry it in, if not the best set up, and I don't really 'need' to shoot .45's thru it. Couple that with a resent ocupational adjustmaent and a $900 hole in each weeks pay, I'm going to stick where I am for now.
Toby, I was pretty sure I'd read that the cap 'n ball qualified as primitive. I can't find that now, of course, but I'm still looking, and have an email into the state to clairifiy it.
It seems that so many guys are all about high cap mags and sending lead down range just as fast as they can. Me? I like wheel guns. They slow things down. You don't have to look for your brass. They are easy to reload, and I just like 'em. Cap 'n ball slows it down even more. Sitting in the woods with a really nice chunk of steel, brass, and wood just makes me happy.
If any of you are in north Georgia, gimme a shout. I'll go shooting for any little excuse.

Somewhere in our magazine library is a article where the writer takes a whitetail with a Walker. I will get LABRAT to see if he knows where it is. I am going to carry my Kahnke 82 .54 pistol this year. It is accurate enough for 100 yard shots and plenty powerful with the 425gr bullets. I am repairing a cap and ball revolver for a gent right now that he is going hunting with. The one that has my interest is a 3rd model Dragoon. Same cylinder and frame as a Walker with a shorter barrel, better sights and a loading arm latch. Black powder is just plain fun but messy. reflex264

The Kahnke

It breaks down in less than a minute for cleaning. Millet sights and a great trigger.

I hope Reohondohank will chime in. He has one of the .50 Caliber Clements conversions on a Ruger old Army. One of the neatest rigs I know of. Carry your Walker and tell us the stories. We like dead critter stories!

Yes, I have a Dave Clements 5 shot .50 cal conversion of a Ruger Old Army that I have taken several deer with. My load is a 250 gr bullet with 50 gr of Triple 7 fff and I get about 1250 fps. It is a hoot to shoot and might just be my most accurate revolver.

I also live in Georgia and the main reason I haven't hunted with my cap and ball revolver is that I can't use it during primitive weapons season. It would take a warden that was either young or up tight to ticket you for hunting with one but per hunting regulations they aren't legal during primitive weapons season.

I know OR is the same way so I haven't used mine here. I wanted to use my Walker when I had it or my 1858SS Uberti since I can load it pretty warm but here you can use a revolving action or multiple barreled firearm so the Revolvers, the 1858 Carbine and the double barrel rifles and the Howdah are all off limits.

Rod and Eric, I share your sentiments and commitment to the letter of the law, but the law in New York, changes as the stooge that wrote it realizes what he left out. there is a bulletin by the New York State Police that says tubular magazines will also be included in the high capacity ban, that owners should only load seven rounds in a tube fed firearm. I have a couple of single shot BP pistols that I have been itchin' to try.

Lots of Cap & ball blackpowder handgun hunters out there. A couple Yahoo groups and members of 1858remington.com and other forums that are blackpowder handgun oriented.
