I am shooting 240 gr and 300 gr XTPs out of my SBH. I have a 2X scope. I am going to use the 240s this year for deer. The shots should be from 25 yards to a max of 100 yards. At what distance should I zero the 240 gr? Then what distance should I zero the 300 gr when I switch to them?

At 100 yards for your max, I'd zero at 50 - 75 and then don't worry about it. If its high or low by a little, you will still be right in there.

"I" like sighting my scoped revolvers in at 75. Mine runs a couple inches low at 100.

I played around with powders and got my 240's to shoot within a couple of inches oh my 300 load at 100. FWIW

If you can shoot an oddball range then I would recommend an 85 yard sight in.

Figuring a full boogie 300gr load @ 1250fps you will be +1.6" at 50 and -1.8" at 100.
Hold dead on for anything from muzzle to 100 yards and you are good to go.

Going slower will increase the numbers but it still will mean that the inches high at 50 and inches low at 100 will be roughly equal.

Along the lines of what 98R said, I have found that if I sight 2" high @ 50 yards I will be between -0- and 4" low @ 100 depending on the load. Best is to plug your data into a ballistic calculator and find the sweet spot, but in lieu of that +2" @ 50 will giterdun, and I can do it on the 50 yard berm in my back yard ;-)

Good info gents. Fortunately, I live out in the country. I can set up a bench at any range out to 100 yards. I think I'll try the 85 yards zero. I need to buy a chronograph.

A chronograph does help in the reloading process, I love working up loads with mine.

That's not enough to miss a deer and if you underestimate the distance and it's over 100 you get a little more leeway.

If you zero at 75 yards and you're target is at 125 then you're 7.5" low and that's too much for me. If you zero at 100 then you're only about 4" low at 125.

And it will probably be 3" high somewhere between there and 100, but as Gary said it is still in the boiler room.

It is easy to think a 125-150 yards is only 100 yards when in the field. I once hit a buck at 800 yards with my .308, thinking I was making a 400 yard shot. I have thought about that for years and cannot understand how I did it, knowing that the bullet would have dropped a country mile. I would not worry about fps, i would use the charts in the reloading manuals and spend my money on a rangefinder. That seems to be my problem, is to figure out distance when sitting on an Idaho mointainside glassing the far tree line.

I zero all my revolvers 2" high at 50 yards, which basically translates to a 100 yard zero. The majority of my hunting situations is less than 100 yards, but I'm comfortable with a 150 yard shot.

I typically zero mine at 75 yards.

Regardless of where you zero, you still need to actually shoot at your max determined distance. Even shooting past you self imposed max just for reference is good practice. Calculations and assumptions can't always account for Mr Murphy and his stinkin laws. Since you have the room shoot farther than you tell yourself you ever will, it will make those 45 yard shots seem easy.

Shooting at long distance (much further than you would in the field) in practice certainly improves your confidence when those shots at your self appointed limit do crop up.

I usually sight my 44Mags in for 1.5" to 2" high at 50 yards. Irons or scopes. Thats good for out to 100 yards with most loads. On just about any animal as long as you have body above the sight plane you are OK assuming you are on the shoulder windage wise.
