I will be taking some time off to hit the woods soon. I plan to hunt with a handgun the whole time. Which gun and load would you like to see the terminal performance on? I have a Glock 45acp with double tap 230 jhp ammo. An Ed Brown 45acp with Winchester Bonded PDX1 230gr. A TC Contender 44 mag with Magtech 240 gr jsp. And lastly I have a FA 454 casull with 330 gr WNF bullets. I will post pictures of the deer and the bullet performance. Let me know what you want to see. Thanks!

Since I only have one hunting handgun so far, I'll refrain from voting, but I'd sure be interested in hearing performance results of the Magtech 44's on deer. I have used alot of them during practice sessions, and they are plenty accurate from my SBHH. If you use the 44, be sure to post up some picks, and a performance report. Good luck this season Toby! You seem to have plenty of choices for caliber.

Thanks for the votes! I will probably hunt first with the 44 mag Contender. It has a red dot sight that I've been wanting to try out. But, if I get one with it, I'll move to something else.

I'm most familiar with the 44 Contender. But I shoot well enough with all of them to feel confident. Of course the Contender is better suited for longer shots, especially with the red dot sight. I like hunting with iron sights too. Where I hunt is thick in places, so I adjust my hunting style to the gun I'm using. I can set up on acorn trees where all I have is a bow range shot, or in open pines where I can see 100 yds. Either way, I prefer a 50 yd or less shot. I love to experiment with different loads, so I'm always looking for something new to try. Right now I'm having fun trying out the various 45 acp loads on deer sized game. I recently shot a doe with my new Glock 21. I was hunting on the ground, and she offered a 20 yd shot. Hunting with the Glock, made what would've been just a meat deer into a fun hunt!

My vote...rotate! Since the Glock got some early season love, put it in the back of the line. Go with the Tender next, then the Ed Brown, followed by the Casull. And repeat!

I would probably use the TC 44mag. Although bigger is usually better when it comes to handguns so the 454 sounds great too.

Use the one you are shooting the best just prior to the season. I would lean towards the 454 (you think?)but nothing wrong with the 44mag either.

I lean towards the 454 but I prefer a lighter jacketed bullet. I was shooting 300gr XTP Mags but switched to the 240gr XTP Mags. Either way a deer isn't going to notice the difference, either the 330 or the XTP's will blow through any deer on the continent.

We can kill 2 bucks and 10 does. I'm buck hunting now, so the doe shooting will have to wait until Thanksgiving. Hopefully I can get a buck or two before then. I'll be hunting with 44 mag magtech ammo. 240 gr jsp. Then go from there.....

Ours are the same. Kind of crazy really. I wish they would not have them the first part of the season, then open them after Thanksgiving.

I don't think I'd be comfortable using a 45 on a deer, but that's just me. I'd have absolutely no problem with using the 44 or 454, though.
If y'all think your deer seasons are crazy, consider Tennessee's. You can take 3 bucks a year, and many of the counties in the western half of the state allow you to kill 3 does EVERY DAY. Extreme? Maybe, but then again we do have plenty. Does anyone actually shoot that many? No.

Check out the pics I posted in the Glock vs Springfield thread in The Shooters Bench. It mat change your mind about the 45 acp.

I hit a nice buck about two weeks ago here in southern middle Tennessee less than a mile from where I deer hunt at. I am planning on killing two or three does every time i go to the woods. I am also planning on using a bunch of different rigs when I go.The thing about having such a liberal harvest is that we get to do a lot of scientific experimentation during deer season to prove concepts derived in the off season.

A story: my father owns some of the nicest guns one could have. He never shoots them, instead he has a pos single shot 243 rifle that has loose sights and the worst trigger pull known to man. He can't hit crap with it. And his great other guns sit at home. If you were in the field and your life was on the line, you would want the best that money could afford. Take the FA, and never look back.

Schunter has the right idea. I'm very curious to see how the 44 magtech soft points work as I have a small stockpile of them and have only killed paper with them so far.
