I had my first primer touching off while using an RCBS hand primer. Scared the hell out of me, i just was priming some new 357 brass and one was a tad tight. Good thing that i had it aimed away from me. It shot a flame out about 6 inches. No loose powder in the area. Be aware of that when reloading

Bet that got the juices flowing. Glad no harm done.

Rod, too.

6" of flame... hmmmm... always wondered how much spark comes out of those things. Now I know! Thanks!!!

Was that the newer syle with the universal shell holder? I just retired my older model RCBS which uses the shell holder from the die set. I cannot even imagine how many rounds I loaded on that old style.

I ask, not blaming the RCBS as this could happen with any hand primer, but my new RCBS has probably 8 or 9 hundred rounds on it now, and I noticed last night that the allen head screws which hold the shell holder assembly had loosened. Not gonna loc tite mine, but I will be checking them periodically. I stopped to investigate, as the case seemed to be getting harder to get in and out.

Old style that has put in thousands of primers. Every once in awhile, a primer will twist or bound up in the plastic sleeve. But i have never shot one off. It was interesting. No wonder that bar separates the rest of the primers. My old lee does not do that

Yup, I have set more than a few sideways and upside down primers in my old model. I'll have to take a look at the new one to see if there is a guard that raises with the cam. Nothing obvious from the outside. I too had the Lee many many moons ago, and the arm broke pretty early on.

Your post was a good reminder for me, as the new RCBS requires that I hold the seater a little differently to get leverage to get the case in and out. When I fire it up again, I am going to look closely at my new hold. Maybe fire it up is a bad choice of words.......

Yep, fire it up is a phrase that I will be aware of from now on. Aim it towards a bench full of powder and you will see fire it up
