I love my 308. Plenty of gun for elk. Accurate and fun to shoot. I would go with 165 gr bullets. There are several well made bullets that will do the job cleanly.

There are so many potential options.
Describe the way you hunt and the max distances you are capable of in field conditions.

Ernie has some good points.

If I were going elk hunting in the near future, my T/C Encore 30-338WM would be my primary handgun. 175's@2850 FPS, and 180's@2800 FPS will do the job at ranges I'm personally capable of shooting.

If you are looking for close to "centerfire rifle" capability in a single shot pistol, the .308 and 30-06 are good choices with a premium bullet such as a Nosler Partition or Accubond in 165 or 180 grain.

And of course bigger stuff too; ie. Buttermilk's post: that is a great caliber for elk. I have killed a handfull of bulls with my .375 JDJ; albeit in a Contender. Sorry, but I am not a fan of smaller diameter bullets for elk than .308 caliber in these single shot pistols; though some may disagree. MHO

However, even more, I love stalking the big bulls with my Custom .475 Linebaugh five-shot Ruger built by Rod.

Hard to beat the 30-06 Encore. With any load mine shoots under 1.5" and with its pet loads it will go .5". 165grs can be launched at 2750fps with no problems. If you loose your ammo any hardware store or Wal-mart can put you back in action. reflex264

I just killed a monster Elk with a 7-08 encore, range was 60 yards. I tried to buy a 30-06 barrel but could not find one to buy.

I wouldn't hesitate to use a big 7mm for elk with the right bullet.

My personal is the 460. Just because I can use it for just about anything, and a lot of States I hunt in you need a straight wall round. My opinion.
Aim small, miss small..
