A friend of mine who hunted elk with me many years ago recently went elk hunting with an outfitter in Southern Colorado and killed this fine 6X6 with his Encore in 7mm-08. He asked me to post it for him. How about the story, Alcorn? His avatar is rleprechuan. By the way, Welcome to HHM!

This Elk was killed between Branson & Kim CO. He scored 342 6/8 green. He was 60 yards quartering away. The first shot went in the left lung, through the heart, out the front of the chest. He did not move, so I moved up about 15 yards and the next shot went a little low, broke the left leg just below the shoulder socket and went through the bottom of both lungs. He went down but was not dead. The third shot was a finisher to the neck. I used a Barnes TSX tipped 140gr., Federal 210 primer, Federal case and IMR-4350 powder.

Nice shooting, Alcorn. Just another example of how big bulls do not die easy.

I didn't think they expanded enough. If I were doing the same hunt again, I would use Swift Scirocco II .284 150gr.

Nice bull Alcorn. Interesting about the tsx not expanding. I have loaded my 7mm-08 with 4895 and varget and have been happy with it the results on paper. Expansion hasn't been much with anything over 140 grains. Seems like most everything over that weight was designed for 7mm mag velocities. I think if I had it to do over again it would be a .308
