I was wondering if any of you have had any cases of bullet blow up with these bullets. I have used them for years with good results, but the last few deer I've shot have resulted in the bullet blowing apart without an exit, and total failure to penetrate the on side shoulder on two of the deer. Both of those deer required a second shot. This has been with a 30/06, 270 & 308win.
I'm thinking it may be time for a change.

I used the Core-lokts for a while in my 270, but I never had any blow up that I'm aware of. How far were those deer when you shot them, and how did the bullets from the follow up shots perform?

They were all within 75 yds. The follow up on one was through the rib cage and it worked fine. The other one we tracked with a dog, so a 22mag took care of him. On that deer the bullet actually blew up on the shoulder like a varmint bullet. It was a 130 gr 270.

You know, I've heard of a few cases of Core-lokt bullets fragmenting at short ranges. Normally I wouldn't worry about it that much, but if it's happened more than once with you, I'd recommend switching bullets. Don't have any recommendations, though. My experience with bullets other than Core-lokts and Winchester Power Points is limited.

Federal premium, sierras, hornadays, barnes all work great. The barnes are made to fly through the animal. I have had to punch elk twice with lots of remingtons and winchester silvertips as well as even nosler partitions

Even Nosler Partitions? Huh, I've only ever heard good things about them.

Toby I would go ahead and switch for confidence reasons. I have had them come apart real quick a couple times but the deer were inside of 40 yards and never took another step. To me they are about as good a deer bullet as you can get without moving to a premium line of ammo.

Yes. I've used the Barnes triple shock and some of the other premium bullets with great results. I have just gotten lazy and haven't reloaded much for rifles in a while. Plus the corelokts just always seem to shoot very accurate in my guns. I really prefer a bullet that leaves two holes. The Barnes are a bit slow killing sometimes, but they penetrate everytime.

I still like them I have just learned to expect them to act more like a nosler ballistic tip at closer ranges. While the tougher bullets will give you an exit at closer ranges they will not expand much once they slow down a bit. Of course you could jump on the bandwagon and get one of those mini artillery pieces that leave the barrel at a half inch.

Off the shelf ammo, i always liked Winchester silvertips. It has been so long that I don't even know if they are still on the shelf. Home grown ammo, i love Hornaday interocked for most shooting. For prime hunts, i use nosler partitions but have started using Barnes bullets. I have made second shots, like i said in an earlier post. Interesting comment, i have not made a second shot with my sbh w/ 10" barrel. I am using Hornaday 300 grainers xt's and some real old speer 240's. Years ago, i saw many an elk and deer shot with corelocked and saw bits and pieces all over inside the beast, as the bullet blew up inside without exiting. Good or bad??!!

I started shooting corlocks many years ago hunting pa . Didnt have jacket seperation or heavy fragmentation. When ny opened rifles in my county a few years ago it was a no brainer to go with corlocks out of my .270. First deer shot high shoulder 45 yds blew up waisting both front shoulders small pieces of lead under skin full jacket seperation. Second deer 75 yds same shot less framentaion but recovered an almost intact copper jacket. Switched up to my .308 . 100 yds give or take same results. Swithed up following year to hornaday interlocks much better results. Had a hard time finding that round again and so switched to fedral fusion with great results out of both 270 and 308. I have since tacken deer as close as 20 yds out too over 200 and no apearence of fragmentation or jacket seperation. I have had complete pass through everytime. No bullets recovered.

I personally believe Remington has made the jacket thinner on the corelokt bullets. Maybe a cost saving measure? Who knows? Seeing as how I have several boxes of component bullets handy, I think I'll just get back to reloading them.

I tried acor-lokt and could never get very good accuracy. I tried Winchester soft point(silver box) and they shoot wonderfully accurate and have taken a bunch of game. They are a couple bucks cheaper that cor-lokt. Give them a try.....will find them at Wally World etc.
