I'd like to querry the wisdom of all here on what would be a good load for moose. Last fall I used a 45-70 in a Super 16 and sort of wished I could reach out to 200 yards. I'm having a .375 Win barrel rechambered and it will be ready soon. I figure this is the ticket in case I have to shoot closer to that 200 yard mark.

I was thinking about using the factory ammunition made by Hornday for TC . The advertised ballistics are a 220 grain flat point at 2300( but I have heard that out of the 14" barrel it is more like 2100)

Would the factory load be enough for moose? Should I use a good handload with a heavier bullet? I like factory ammo due to a misfire at a big bear with a handload. Also, does anyone custom load this round?

So. Any comments will be welcomed. Thank you.

Having not shot the TC Factory rounds I can't comment on them. I load for my .375JDJ with the SSK Shilen barrel. This barrel likes the Hornady 220FP and with my load is hitting 2050 fps from the 14" Contender barrel. This load is two grains below max and could probably be pushed easily to 2100 but I don't think it needs it. With a rechamber 2000 might be as good as you could get. My rechambers in the SSK rounds are a little slower than my SSK barrels in same caliber or my hunting buddies SSK barrels.
I'm loading the Nosler 260 Accubond right now and will see how they do. I have been told this is a very good bullet for the .375JDJ. We will see. I would not hesitate to use the 220grn Flat Point on a Moose, Elk, Bear, deer or any other large game. The 260 or 270 might be a little better on Brownies or Buf. I have seen what the 220's do to deer and wet phone books. Very nasty.
Good luck with your rechamber and maybe I will shoot some TC ammo just to see how it will work in my barrel.

I've been using 260gr Accubonds with 48gr of h4895 giving me right at 2000 fps and 2300ftlbs of energy. I sight in 2" high at 100 which gives me a 150yd zero and 4.5" low at 200 with 1650ftlbs of energy @ 1690fps. My 220gr loads use 49.5gr of h322 for 2144fps and 2246ftlbs of energy and at 200yds I have about 5.5" of drop and 1496fps and 1094ftlbs of energy. I think you would be happier with the accubond, the reason it carries more velocity and energy, and is flatter shooting than the 220 is its ballistic coefficient, .473(accubond) to .217(hornady 220)

BigBore, I shot my 6x6 Bull at 175yds with a SSK Shien 375JDJ 285 GrandSlam over 4064. Three complete pass thu's and 1 dead Elk. My new 15" 375H&H is shooting 300 BBTSP at 2350 with 67g 4064 (2-1/2" 100 group). Recoil is fierce! My 375JDJ 285/4064 load chrono'd right at 2000fps. After shooting the Elk with the JDJ, I really still consider it a premium 200yd killing machine. I'm not sure about the 220 for 200yd shots though? I do like the Hornady 270 and Speer 285 for carrying enerfy and momentum but I've always been a fan of heavier for caliber bulets. JMO!

52gr. of Varget for the 270 Hornaday. The I found the bullet under the skin on the far side of the moose I shot with this load. But he was only about 20 yards away.

The 260 Accubond is a harder bullet than the Horn. Not sure I would go over about 51.5 gr. of Varget in a rechamber. Personally, I would get a chrono and load them up to about 2050 fps and call it good. I have found that Varget is a great powder for that bullet weight range in terms of velocity and accuracy.

Use standard precautions - work up slowly, and monitor velocity. This is especially true with a rechamber.

Longest shot I have made with my .375 JDJ in the field is about 120 yards on a black bear. Have not had a need to shoot further. I have never had a misfire with my .375 JDJ in over 600 rounds. Join HHI, there is a guy that advertises in the Sixgunner for custom ammo I believe.

Well, I have loaded 10 of the 260 Accubond with 48grns of Varget and 10 260's with 48grns of IMR4895. I will shoot them tomorrow with some other calibers. I will shoot for group and chrono them. I'm going to work up on the Varget and see what I can get up to about 50grns. I have some Hornaday 270's also I might load a few of them. Can't wait to shoot them. I'm planning a hog hunt in a week or so and would like to get the performance like Wapitirod has. Then I could shoot out to 200 yds for hogs, deer and elk. My hog hunting area is 180yds across and about 100yds long peanut field that is secluded and surrounded but trees and a swamp. This is why the farmer has asked me to "Put a Hurt'n" on some hogs as he says it. He killed over 75 hogs last year as they distroyed his fields. I will keep you informed of my progress.

Let m try this again, I am new at this so here goes. I use 48.0 grs. of H4895 with the Hornady 270 gr. bullet. My brother shot a moose at about 125 yards and got full penetreation. If it will shoot thru a moose it will shoot thru most anything. HANDGUN hunting is the only way to go. I been doing it for about 25 years.

I'd be surprised if you got good results using the Accubond and Varget. The load density for that length bullet doesn't allow you to get enough powder in the case. I've not tried it yet but a buddy is getting excellent results with the Accubond and N140 (about 52 grs MAX.) I've shot some pretty good sized critters with the Speer 270 and 52 grs. of Varget at a touch over 2000 fps. The only bullet I recovered was shot lengthwise through a kudu. The Hornady 270 is also a great bullet for bigger stuff and works well with Varget. I wouldn't use the Factory 220's on Moose - they are a great bullet for smaller deer.
