Hey folks,

I don't post a lot on here, but frequent the threads now and then.

Anyway, I thought I would post a pic of my latest hunt. I moved a little over a year ago to mid Georgia for my work and haven't joined a place to hunt down here until next year, so I went back home to Kentucky for the deer opener. I've been hunting on a friends 465 acres for the past 10yrs. or so. Opening morning broke in the upper 30's and windy. Luckily the wind was right for my little "honey hole". I saw 4 bucks ranging from button to a small 8 pointer before 11am., all giving me time to evaluate them for size. At noon, while munching on a snack and texting my wife in GA., this buck came trotting by at 70yds. on a mission. I pitched the phone and drew the Ruger in time to see a profile of good sized deer with, what I thought was a tall fairly heavy rack. He turned and gave me a quartering away shot to the left rib cage. I gave him a Nosler 250gr. Partition over ww296 from the .44mag. and he went down within 20yds. He was a typical three yr. old 9 pointer for this area, missing one of his brow tines and a broken G2 and scars on his back from fighting. He was far from my best deer taken on this farm, but for a now "out of stater" I'll take it.
This buck was the 11th buck I've taken out of this two acre ravine I call the "honey hole", and the 31st. deer taken with this Ruger SBH Hunter. I love handgun hunting and taken whitetails...

Sounds like a real honey hole, but 31 with a single handgun. That is VERY impressive. Great buck, and I wish you luck in your search for a new honey hole in GA.

Great Buck! The partition is a nice handgun bullet. I witnessed Jamesfromjersey drop one of the biggest boar I've ever seen with one shot from his 454 with a partition.

Thanks fellows.

Craig, I have found two places for next year. One is 4300 acres and the other is 2800 acres. Both less than 50mins. from my place in Newnan. But man, they aren't cheap. But they have deer, turkey, coyotes, hogs and fishing ponds. Not to bad, I guess. Unlike Kentucky, down here it's a "club/lease" thing. Unless you own your own place.

Franchise, I agree. I have taken quit a few deer and other big game with the Partitions with great results. No tracking involved, DRT. I bought several boxes when they closed them out.

bluecow,

You need to come south. Kentucky bag limit is 1 buck and all the does you want for the 2 doe for $10 tags. And a two week center fire season. But in Georgia, it's 2 bucks and all the does you want and a center fire season from the 3rd. week in OCT. till the end of January. Unreal............
There's deer every where in these two states.

Now that I think about it, when I black bear hunted in Dover Foxcroft Maine, I don't recall seeing any deer only moose.

Congrats nice buck. If you didn't notice they closed antlerless season for about 25 days in GA. They didn't change the limit just changed when you could kill them.

Congratulations, rugernut! That's a fine deer taken with a fine handgun.

Kennon,

I was raised in Augusta, and have been out west for a lot of years now. Decades actually. There are times I envy you guys with multiple deer tags, as out west it's one and done, if you can even get the one. We have elk, high mountain lakes and incredible streams, but what I would give anymore to have a pond, a pole, a bobber and a bucket of worms.......Have fun with the new leases, that's a lot of acres to sort out.

Great job! would love to pick up a SBHH in 45 Colt one day.

Sometimes I envy you guys down there. Up here we get to hunt large areas, but in the areas accessible to most guys who can't afford fly in stuff the numbers are very low. This year a fiend & I drove approx. 1500 miles round trip to the area we moose hunted. We put about another 600 miles on his rig (2100 miles total at an average of about $5.00 a gal for diesel) the week we were there scouting. Also quite a few miles on his Polaris 6 wheeler side by side in swamp trails & running the pipeline. Hours on hillsides glassing. We saw 6 moose total including a small bull I killed with my Marlin Guide Gun. Folks told us it's usually an area "Worth the drive", but that this year was not normal. The area I live (Kenai Peninsula) is a huge area has a population of about 30,000. Moose #s are so low less than 100 legal bulls were taken this year so hunting local is pretty much a bust & has been for years
Our plan next is to do a river hunt on either the Tanana or Yukon rivers. Around 700 miles one way to get there & then lots of river miles on the boat(s). It will take a couple of years to stuff the sock with enough $ to make that trip happen, even though he & I both have boats that will do the job.

I would love to have areas within a 3 or 4 hr drive where I could see multiple legal animals!
Not whining (too much) but all this to say I know a lot of folks dream of Alaska, but count yourselves as blessed for hunting opportunities!

Amen!
I can only imaging the bond a guy would have with that particular gun at that point! It's not just "a gun" anymore.
