I'd say a 44 mag. & I don't even own one anymore. The ammo availability is just much better if you don't reload. 44 Specials lighten things up. I prefer a 45 Colt but started w/a 44 mag. I also believe a 22 for practice can really polish you w/more volume & less $$. If you do reload you can lighten up 44's just like a 45. BUT 45's are better!

Mine as well, but for the newby who likely doesn't handload the 44 magnum is probably a better option as you can find hunting ammo in every SG store on the planet. For the recoil shy, there is the Special which can be fired in the same gun.
